Dear Nicky,

Back in the day when we submitted a candidate to our NPA partners, we sent a long cover sheet. This was our notes on the candidate and included things like salary, motivation for change, relocation preferences, etc. This was valuable information as it gave the inside scoop on the candidate from a recruiter's point of view. When I look at the records being posted lately, they have one line or N/A: no reason for me to work with them. Give me at least enough to know if I am interested.

Looking for Candidates in Lowell

Dear Lowell,

I don't disagree with you! This is how you “sell your candidate” and share things with your partner not found in the resume/CV. Here are some good tips for those who are unsure what, if anything, to include in your candidate presentations.

Comments

This is your “sell factor” of the candidate; the area where you can demonstrate to your trading partner that you know more about your candidate than name, address, phone number and e-mail. Make it look personal and make sure you add degree, buzz words, etc. to entice your affiliates to look further. Here are ideas of what to put in the Comments section:

  • Objective / reason for looking
  • What could current employer do to keep the candidate (helps avoid counteroffers)
  • Verbal communication skills
  • Able to conduct phone and virtual or in-person interviews in a reasonable timeframe
  • Professional strengths
  • Relocation preferences
  • Personal issues that impact a new role or relocation (be careful to follow laws about discrimination)
  • Ability to start a new job within 2-4 weeks (this timeframe may be different in some countries)
  • How long has the candidate been looking
