A fairly common support request we receive at NPAworldwide is regarding PDF resumes that won't upload to Matchmaker. If your candidate has embedded images, tables, odd fonts, or other problematic data in the PDF, you'll likely encounter difficulties getting that resume/CV uploaded. You may even have trouble opening the file. As more candidates use mobile devices for their career searches, we think that PDF versions of resumes are likely to increase, since they can easily be stored and opened on a mobile device.

I have some good news, though! All is not lost. It *IS* possible to convert those files to a Word format, which will work more reliably.

If you have Adobe Acrobat X Pro (or newer) ... please note, this is NOT the free "Adobe Reader" that comes with your system ... you can open a PDF and Save As a number of different formats, including Word. Adobe Acrobat X  Pro can cost around US $450, so if you don't want to spend that kind of money, here are some other options:

  • Icecream PDF Converter - currently available for free; there is a premium upgrade available for about $20. The free version limits the number of files you can convert.
  • Export PDF to Word (Adobe) - currently US $1.99/month, billed at $23.88 annually
  • Smallpdf - free 14-day trial available, than US $12/month. Not only can you convert a PDF to Word, you can also rearrange pages in a PDF, compress a large PDF file to a smaller size (I do this regularly), plus a host of other tools.
  • Wondershare PDFElement - if you need a more full-featured option including the ability to create forms, etc., take a look at this option. The standard version is US $59.year or you can update to the pro version for US $79 (individual user pricing)

UPDATE April 17, 2020 ... You can also upload your PDF to Google Drive and open it as a Google Document, which will instantly convert the PDF to a text format. Then you can download it from Google docs as Word, odt, rtf, pdf, txt, html and epub.

I hope you find this useful - if there are other conversion tools you've found, please add a comment below!
