Dear Nicky,

I'm a newer member and have been sharing my jobs. Lately, I've received a number of "candidates" that are just a LinkedIn or Indeed profile, with a note from the candidate recruiter asking me to "take a look and see if this person is a good fit" and if so, they will attempt to make contact. I've got to be honest; this isn't what I expected to see when I joined the network. Are my expectations wrong?

Annoyed in Ann Arbor

Dear Ann,

Thanks for writing. I'm sorry you're experiencing this, and I share your frustration.

NPAworldwide policy is quite clear: A direct relationship with the client or candidate must be established before any submittal takes place. Establishment of a direct relationship requires that value be added through supplying information beyond that contained in job ads or resumes sourced from an outplacement service or web postings. Direct contact must be current and firsthand, and gained through extended written or voice contact with the client or candidate. Without a direct relationship, members may forfeit a claim to a split placement.

A note to candidate recruiters: Unless a partner tells you otherwise IN ADVANCE, the expectation is that every candidate submittal has been screened and vetted against the job requirements. Sending a LinkedIn or other profile, without having spoken with the person to even determine interest, does not meet our standards for cooperative placement. Furthermore, it is lazy and asks the job recruiter to do the candidate recruiter's work, while also potentially compensating the candidate recruiter. There aren't many job recruiters who are interested in sharing a fee for this sort of low effort. If you have questions about the job requirements, contact your partner for clarification before you begin any recruitment or screening activity. True partners treat other members the same way they treat their best clients. If you wouldn't send an unscreened LinkedIn profile to your best client, then don't send it to your partner either.

Nicky
