Dear Nicky,

I have a lot of jobs, but don’t seem to be getting much action. I update them on a regular basis, so not sure what else I should be doing.

Help in Hesperia

Dear Help,

I would point out that updating your jobs on a regular basis should not be your only strategy. For jobs you *do* want to update, make sure you are updating them properly. After that, here are some other suggestions that lead to more success:

  • Create a list of members that work this area and send your jobs directly to them using the list.
    • If you don't hear anything after a week, follow up with a phone call. You'd be surprised how many emails go to junk or don't get delivered at all.
  • Log in-to monthly Practice Group calls so members are aware of your job.
  • Make sure you communicate with your partners; this is the biggest reason your partners will stop working with you.
  • Finally, make sure your jobs are worth your NPA partners' time. If they are jobs you tried to fill on your own with no results, or your client does not respond in a timely manner, don’t expect your partner to jump through hoops to help. Other things to consider:
    • The fee is competitive for today's market
    • The job is in demand, with partners who regularly fill these roles (check the Money Letter to see what kind of placements are being made)
    • Educate your client about the realities of counteroffers. Most candidates are going to get them, so your client needs to make a competitive offer
    • Good candidates won't wait around for multiple rounds of interviews with slow feedback

Good luck! Exporters are busy and are focusing on great jobs with great clients.

Nicky
