We are all attracted to new shiny things, too often we give up old things for new.

Those that know me well know that I like to sew. I make a lot of quilts; not sure I am good at it, but it is relaxing to me. I have four sewing machines, yes four.  My family teases me as my 1820 Singer is a valuable collector’s item but I will not part with it.

Sometimes the old machine is more effective for some jobs than the newer shiny ones with lots of bells and whistles.  My classic Singer will sometimes accomplish what others cannot.  Here is a picture of my old friend.  Isn’t she a beauty!

My comparison to recruiting is this…sometimes we need to stick with what works, what made us effective and successful over the years in this business.  Recruiting technologies are like the new sewing machines, they may be cool but sometimes old ways are more effective. My Singer is like the telephone.  It has been outdone by much cooler tools, but in the end, if you can engage someone on the phone, your success rate will climb.
We need to remember we are in the people business and people need to feel valued.  A call is more likely to generate a feeling of value than and LinkedIn InMail or an email.  In my tenure at NPA I have seen folks come and go but those who remember the basics of recruitment used 25 years ago continue to be successful and are masters of repeat business.
