Dear Nicky,

My client called with an urgent role, and I am anxious to get started. We have not hashed out the fee agreement yet but I want to get it posted so members can start recruiting candidates. That is fine, correct?

Urgent in Ubly

Dear Urgent,

Well, not exactly. I understand you want to get a jump on this urgent role for your client, but you need to have a fee to post the job. This is a required field on Matchmaker, so you cannot post your job without including fee details. While every member firm is required to publish their fee schedule on their office profile, there are plenty of times when an exception to that fee schedule is made for a particular client or a particular role. Your partner needs to fully understand your terms before submitting candidates.

During the placement activity, your client may ask for a change in the terms. Your partner must agree to that change before you submit the partner's candidate. Failure to obtain this agreement means you could be obligated to paying your partner a higher fee, if they have designated a minimum fee for their candidate. For example, if your normal fee is 25% and your partner submits a candidate for whom they expect a minimum fee of 25% (from the client), that is great. If, later, you agree to lower the fee to 20%, your partner must agree to accept 20% as well. If you don't get that agreement from the partner, and their candidate is hired, you will likely need to pay your partner as if you received a 25% fee.

Members (posting AND submitting) are reminded to ALWAYS verify the fee before any placement activity begins.

Nicky
