Wishing a Fond Farewell to Chris Paull, Director of TechnologyChris announced to the membership last month that she is retiring from NPAworldwide at the end of April after 48 years of service. I recently called her and asked her to share some memories so I could capture a bit of history before she rides off into the sunset. I planned to ask Chris 10 or so questions, but our conversation evolved into so much more than I anticipated. Let me tell you, Chris is a treasure trove of NPAworldwide historical knowledge. Chris’ professional career didn’t begin with NPA. For the first five years of her career, she was a quality inspector for an engraving company that used hand-fed printing presses to create stationery and other fine paper products. This was a family-owned printing company, and when the owner’s younger daughter came of age, Chris knew her time with them was over. She was fired and said it was probably the best thing that ever happened to her! |

Local Search AlertsWe always recommend creating Search Alerts for candidates and/or jobs that match your niche, but here's another great idea. Consider creating an alert for your local market. You may not normally do a lot of local work, but it's an easy opportunity to pick up a job that fits your wheelhouse or a candidate that can be worked into an MPC presentation. We're aware of several members who have done this and wound up making some unexpected splits. Give it a try - especially if your bread-and-butter activity is slow. |
Why Meetings MatterDear Nicky, I've never been to a Global Conference. It just really hasn't been something that has piqued my interest, but I sure hear a lot of members talking about it. How important is it, really, to attend meetings? Not a Traveler in Norvell |

Volunteering in NPAworldwideDear Nicky, I get emails/phone calls from NPAworldwide staff on occasion asking me to be a peer coach, area leader, etc. I'm not really sure what's involved in these roles, or whether I'm even interested in volunteering. How can I learn more? Curious in Cusino |
Job Board Usage and the LawAs you know, when you post on NPAmarketplace, we offer an option to place your job on the NPAjobboard. It is expected that there is something unique about your job. For example, it is a low fee job that members would not work, it is a job you have been unable to gain support or candidates for from network partners, or you are doing a job on the edges of our typical executive professional focus. That is something we count on you to make a smart decision on. The NPAjobboard is not intended to replace member-to-member partnerships. |

SpamCop Blocking Wanted EmailNPAworldwide began experiencing intermittent email delivery issues from our Outlook account about a week ago. After some investigation, we have learned that one of the Microsoft 365-owned servers that routes our email has been blacklisted by a spam filtering company called SpamCop in response to a high volume of spam coming from that particular server. Rather than block the offending email accounts, SpamCop blocks the entire IP address, which prevents a lot of legitimate email from being delivered. This is an aggressive spam filter. If your IT provider uses SpamCop, please contact them and ask for email from @npaworldwide.com or @membernova.email to be delivered, even if it is being routed from a blacklisted server. Unfortunately, this has been an ongoing issue for the better part of a month with little response from Microsoft. You can learn more about the SpamCop blocking list here: SpamCop.net - Blocking List ( bl.spamcop.net ) |
Receiving Email from NPAworldwidePeriodically, it's a good idea to confirm that you are receiving email from NPAworldwide as expected. Here are a few tips:
Unless there is a delivery failure that comes back to NPAworldwide (fairly rare), we have no way of knowing if our email is making it to your inbox. Email that gets delivered to your server, but not to your inbox, does not generally result in a delivery failure message. This is the vast majority of email delivery issues that we see, and the vast majority (more than 90%) are solved by adding the two safe senders as indicated above. |

Cash Refunds on ReplacementsDear Nicky, I recently filled a role with a candidate provided by a fellow NPA member – yay! It’s a 90-day guarantee and my partner understands that and said they will do their best to help fill the role in the case of a fall-off. The problem is my partner is saying that they will not pay me back the fee if we aren’t successful in finding a replacement. I’m hoping we don’t have a fall-off, but in case we do… aren’t they obligated to pay the fee back to me if we don’t find a replacement? Fearful in Franklin |
Cross-Border Placement: Prestige Recruiting Firm & Connect ResourcesOne of the benefits of NPAworldwide membership is the ability to promote an international capability to your clients, serve your clients outside of their home markets, maximize your firm’s business opportunity by spending your time where the jobs are, and avoiding down economic situations in your home market. NPAworldwide defines “cross-border” splits as deals where the partners are operating in different countries. Here is a story about members that completed a cross-border split. |
Happy Holidays 2023The holiday season is a time of reflection, appreciation, and joy, and I want to extend my warmest wishes to you and your loved ones this holiday season. This past year I have endeavored to popularize, every chance I have, a phrase that I feel reflects the NPA experience. That phrase is: The Essence of NPA. My dear friend Laura Schmieder shared this phrase with us a couple of years ago when she received the Chairman’s Award; it really hit home for me that day. To be precise; the Essence of NPAworldwide is the people, and the relationships—everything else follows.

NPAworldwide Network Anniversaries - October, November and December 2023Congratulations to the following firms celebrating a milestone anniversary as NPAworldwide members in October, November & December 2023: |
RCSA Board Appointments for NPAworldwide membersSome wonderful news from Australia/New Zealand this week. It has just been announced that two NPAworldwide members; Catherine O’Mahony, OnQ Recruitment and Jason Elias, Elias Recruitment have been elected to sit on the RCSA Board. The RCSA (Recruitment, Consulting and Staffing Association) is the peak body for the recruitment and staffing industry in Australia and New Zealand. RCSA drives professional practice, promotes & protects the industry. The Board of Directors is responsible for all matters pertaining to the running of the Association, including determining policy, practices, management, and operation of RCSA . Catherine will be the representative for NSW/ACT and Jason’s role will be to represent Accredited Professional Members. Having NPAworldwide members on the RCSA board is a great advantage, as they bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. Many will know that Jason is a long-term member of NPAworldwide, he celebrates his 20th year in the network this month and has also been an active volunteer in NPAworldwide with a collective 10 years volunteerism, including Chairman of the Board. We recently had the opportunity to thank Jason for his efforts, with Chair-Elect Pam Robison presenting him with a plaque at our AU/NZ Conference last month. Catherine has also been a long-term, active member of NPAworldwide with OnQ Recruitment celebrating 10 years of membership this year. NPAworldwide and RCSA have strong partnership with many of our members, also members of RCSA. RCSA has supported our AU/NZ Conferences, including their CEO Charles Cameron often presenting on the state of the industry at our events. I am sure having Catherine and Jason represented on the board will further strengthen our partnership. On behalf of the Australia / New Zealand membership, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Catherine O’Mahony and Jason Elias on their election to the RCSA Board. Their contributions to the recruitment and staffing industry are invaluable, and we are thrilled to see them recognised in this way. More information regarding their appointments and the RCSA can be found HERE |

The Essence of NPAworldwide in BrisbaneToday I've asked Gary Banks to recap the "Essence of NPAworldwide" as experienced during the recent Australia/New Zealand Recruitment Conference in Brisbane. - Jim Lyons Recruiters have much affinity with the circus, whether it's juggling the expectations of multiple stakeholders, balancing the high wire of candidates accepting or not accepting roles, or just dealing with the clowns in our office (spoiler alert- it's usually the owners!). Recently the world's largest recruitment cooperative NPAworldwide took this theme one step further, with our Australian/New Zealand Conference titled "Taming the Talent Circus- AI's Role in Shaping the Future of Recruitment." |
Partners Advertising "No Advertise" RolesDear Nicky, It has been quite the week. I share a lot of details about my jobs with my NPAworldwide partners so they have all the information I have. Lately I have been feeling like it is a mistake. I had one recruit from my client and another post a job that said no advertising. My trading partners need to help protect my relationship with my client. They are being sloppy and lazy with permission to advertise and not paying attention to where the candidate is currently located and where they work. Not sure what more I can do. Small Business Saves on Healthcare! At NPA Healthcare we love it when we can help you succeed! Success in NPAworldwide: My Recipe 🍳For my From the Chair article today, I've asked our newest Hall of Fame inductee, Ed Wallach, to share some of his secrets to success in NPAworldwide. Enjoy! —Jim Lyons Hello to all my esteemed NPA affiliate partners. I’ve been on this journey for over 32 years, when I joined my dad’s business back in 1991. He had started the firm in 1965. I was absolutely clueless and probably looked like a deer in headlights. I remember going to my first NPA meeting in 1991. I was skeptical at first and didn’t really get what was going to unfold over the next 30+ years. Besides the compensation we get from making splits, the top beneficiary I got was lifelong friends. |
Money Letter - August 2023 |
What is the Hall of Fame?Dear Nicky, I'm a newer consultant and I noticed a field on my NPAmarketplace profile called "Recruiter Achievement" with a dropdown list of options? What is this and which option should I select? Achieving in Acme |

Insights from NPAworldwide Connecting Asia Recruitment Kuala Lumpur ConferenceRecently, 60+ members of NPAworldwide gathered for a Regional APAC meeting in KL to network, share their thought leadership, best practices, make new friends and renew old friendships. In doing so they carry on a tradition and practice at NPAworldwide that goes back almost 70 years. I would like to thank Carola Chard our Board member for APAC, Andrew Thoseby Board Member for AUS/NZ, and Kristen Davie for doing such a great job organizing this event. I've asked Carola to summarize the event below: It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I reflect on our recent conference held in Kuala Lumpur. With over 60 members from across the APAC, Europe, and the USA, this gathering truly exemplified the remarkable power of face-to-face meetings. We enjoyed impactful presentations, networking, fun and friendship, creating new business opportunities within our global recruiting network along the way. In an age where virtual communication has become the norm, there's clearly an irreplaceable magic that happens when we come together in person. |
Are you NPAworldwide Lazy? What is this you might ask? We are seeing members who send their NPA partners a LinkedIn Profile(s) asking if this is what they are looking for. I get it; you don’t want to waste time on sending stuff that is not applicable but don't waste your partner's time either. Have you thought about picking up the phone instead and having a conversation? Yes, I said it, a real person-to-person live talk. You can learn a lot more on a phone call about the ins and outs of the client and your partner. This is also a great way to build relationships with your NPA partners. |

A Shout-Out to Some New Members (Killing it in NPAworldwide)The common denominator of success in NPAworldwide is being proactive, not reactive. Don't sit back waiting for the phone to ring; reach out and make things happen. The essence of NPAworldwide is centered in close personal and business relationships, trust and integrity. Yes, veteran members will introduce themselves to you, but the new members must take the lead in initiating new relationships. In today's Vignette, I have asked two relatively new members, Adam Pantelli and Phil Hurd, to briefly share their first-year success stories. I had the pleasure to speak to both Adam and Phil recently. In discussion, it was clear to me that both wanted to make sure the membership knew who they were and what they could deliver. It comes as no surprise the results that followed. |
LinkedIn Account Hacking on the RiseIf, like most recruiters, you rely heavily on a certain networking platform, you should be aware that there has been a huge increase in LinkedIn account hacking over the past 90 days. |

The Essence of NPAworldwide - People and RelationshipsIn my continuing mission to popularize the Essence of NPAworldwide, I was honored two weeks ago to attend a retirement lunch for Kay Durkin in Philadelphia. Kay received Honorary membership for her years of service to the network. Kay is also a past Chairman's Award winner, Board member and longtime volunteer. I would like to thank Laura Schmeider and Jeff McGraw for setting up this event. It was great to speak to Kay about her iconic NPA participation over the years. I also asked Christine Kines of Vector Recruiting to share her recent experiences with Kay: "It was so wonderful to celebrate Kay at her retirement party! When I joined NPAworldwide, a little over a year ago, Kay generously agreed to be my peer coach. What a difference having a peer coach made in my level of success at NPAworldwide. Kay was instrumental in helping me make connections and ensuring I had all the resources I needed. |

Doing Business in or with Ontario, Canada and other Provinces Could Get DifficultGreetings. For this Vignette issue, I have asked NPAworldwide President Dave Nerz to summarize the impact of recently-enacted legislation that is coming into effect in Ontario, CA on 1 January 2024. It is critical that all Ontario and Canadian NPAworldwide members reach out and complain to their respective legislative leaders on the anti-competitive and punitive nature of this legislation. —Jim Lyons, Chairman New legislation was announced in July and will go into effect on January 1, 2024. It says, “Any person who, for a fee, finds, or attempts to find, employment in Ontario for prospective employees”…and “Any person who, for a fee, finds, or attempts to find, employees for prospective employers in Ontario…” is required to hold a license. The cost is $750 plus a $25,000 CND irrevocable letter of credit. This is for those residing in Ontario and those doing work with Ontario-based employers or employees. It will have an impact on NPAworldwide and members doing work in Ontario. |

Building Bridges to Asia and Connecting GloballyToday's guest contributor is Carola Chard from CMCC in Hong Kong, our director for Asia. I am so happy to be part of NPAworldwide. It has been a most rewarding investment to join this network that brought over the years not just business connections and opportunities for splits with partners, but also created an ever-growing circle of friends. With every meeting and conference we learn more about each other and about the specialty areas, as well as preferred methodologies. When we speak with clients about our global reach, such knowledge of our international partners can add a great value to the conversation. |

No Help on an Urgent JobDear Nicky, I am frustrated that I just asked for urgent assistance on a job and no one is helping!!! Frustrated in Fremont |

A Salute to Retiring Member Kay DurkinA few days ago I had the pleasure to speak to a new member, an individual pretty new to the recruitment industry (kind of like Kay years ago). I was impressed with this new member's energy and excitement about joining the network. Members like this represent the future of NPAworldwide. Equally as important, we must never forget the wonderful history of this almost 70 year old recruitment network. Today the Chairman's Corner recognizes retiring member Kay Durkin of Phoenix Partners in greater Philadelphia. Kay's iconic journey with NPAworldwide started in 1993. I am sure all readers will take a moment to wish Kay well in the Chairman’s Corner comment section below.

When does it make more sense to do a project instead of a single placement?NPAworldwide members Laura LaBine and Hugh Morris are taking a different approach to filling a role for a manufacturing client. Last December while on a contract staffing call, Laura brought up a client requirement and asked if anyone could translate a SOW (Statement of Work) into a job description. After a 10-second delay with no one responding, Hugh said, “Sure, I majored in English literature, I should be able to write this.” |
Collaboration Among Recruitment ProfessionalsPatrick Long is today's guest writer. I am honored and excited to share the news of my recent election to the NPAworldwide Board of Directors. As I embark on this new responsibility, I am eager to contribute to the continued growth and success of our collaborative community while reflecting on the journey that led me here and the invaluable resources NPAworldwide has to offer. Shortly after starting Provision People, I recognized the immense value in collaborating with a global network of other recruiters. This realization led me to join NPAworldwide, where I've had the privilege of working with talented professionals from around the world, building lasting relationships, and driving revenue for my firm through split fee placements. The support, resources, and opportunities provided by NPAworldwide have been instrumental in my professional growth and the success of our business.

Practice Groups Leadership UpdateIt's been an honor and a joy to serve on the NPAworldwide Board of Directors for the last four years. My specific focus was leading the Practice Groups, and they have proven to be the ever-evolving heartbeat of our organization. When I joined ten years ago, the Chem Processing group was the top revenue-performing group. With shifts in the economy and market, the group withered down to a point where it was combined with the Agriculture and Food practice group. As change is a constant, it will be interesting to see where the labor market creates now specializations that would require the support of a Practice Group. |

What is NPAworldwide Doing with AI?It seems that artificial intelligence (AI) has captured the industry’s attention. Maybe more than just the industry, the world seems enamored with AI. What is amazing to me is that it was not until Microsoft and Google started their PR machines that everyone started paying attention. Now I get asked if NPA will integrate AI into the network a few times a month now. Well good news, we have had our eye on AI for much longer than it has been an industry topic and the hype machines have been pouring out stories. |

NPAmarketplace Security Enhancement Coming SoonWe are implementing an automatic logoff protocol to NPAmarketplace to improve site security. This enhancement will be launched on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. The auto logoff is intended to prevent unauthorized access to NPAmarketplace during periods of inactivity, as many records contain sensitive information about clients, candidates, or members. The automatic logoff will be triggered at midnight (in the user's local time zone) if a session is inactive. |
You Get What You GiveToday my guest commentator is my dear friend, the incomparable Jason Elias. Jason will be leaving the NPAworldwide board on March 2. Jason’s years of membership and service to NPA has been iconic. His professionalism, dedication, and advocacy for all members of the network is a benchmark and a standard of service excellence. In addition to being a loving family man and industry leader, Jason possesses a quick wit and a spontaneous sense of humor. I think Jason could have a second career as a stand-up comic! I have a big smile on my face as I think of several times in the midst of a serious discussion, he inserted some comic relief. Often, it was so fast and clever that it went right over my head… Jason, we thank you for your dynamic leadership and remarkable service to NPA. You have touched the lives of so many. It has been my honor to serve alongside you on the Board and the Executive Committee. Above all, I thank the Lord for the gift of your friendship. —JL |
Job Board ApplicantsDear Nicky, I am new to NPAworldwide and just recently started using the NPAjobboard. Recruiter Achievement Status - January 2023Below is a list of new recruiters at each Recruiter Achievement Status level for the month of January 2023: |
AI Tool That Helps You Write BetterTired of hearing about ChatGPT? There's another AI game in town that I think is worth serious consideration. It's called Jasper and it was just named one of the Fastest-Growing Products of 2023. It's a tool I have been using weekly for the past couple of years to help shore up writing and other content-creation tasks. And it's unbelievably good, doing about 80% of the work for me. I use it for email subject lines, press releases, marketing emails, rewriting content from other sources that needs more "oomph" and more. |
Poor Quality Candidate SubmittalsDear Nicky, I received a candidate from a member and was wondering how they think a client will pay a fee for them. They have employment gaps in their resume (some over a year), currently not working and not willing to move. Really?? Do members understand what a client would pay a fee for? I know sometimes there is a good reason for employment gaps, but that needs to be explained in the comments. Poor Quality in Posen |

Collaboration and Volunteering: The Future of Professional DevelopmentMy guest commentator today is the one and only Laura LaBine. Laura will be leaving the NPAworldwide Board on March 2; we will miss her. Her expertise in recruitment is only surpassed by her contagious laugh, energy and her effervescent personality. Laura’s dedication to NPAworldwide is all about commitment and service. Laura, you are a shining example of the essence of NPA, and we thank you. —JL Working together to reach a common goal is an essential part of any successful business. However, there’s more to collaboration than just getting the work done; it can also be a powerful tool for professional development. |

NPAworldwide Best PracticesAs your Board Chair, it is my honor to regularly speak to members, both new and veteran, as well as those leaving NPAworldwide. In doing so, the vast majority of discussions are positive and productive. What is clear, is that the common denominator of success at NPA is being proactive and transparent. Click here for a great summary of NPAworldwide Best Practices. I would like to speak about several bad practices that have crossed my desk of late. |
Coverage of New Salary Posting Laws - How Broad? On January 1, 2023, California and Washington State joined Colorado in requiring salary ranges to be included in job posts. Employers with no offices or employees in these states might think they are off the hook from complying, but that would be at odds with the views of the regulators. |

Paying Your PartnersDear Nicky, I am fairly new to NPAworldwide and made my first placement already. Yay! I added the placement to the system and received the check in the mail 20 days later. To my dismay, I received a call from the candidate recruiter asking me when he would receive his money. I told him the guarantee period was 90 days but I did have the check from the client. He was not happy. Am I doing something wrong? Checking in Champion |

Proposed Ban on Non-CompetesLast week the United States' Federal Trade Commission published a proposed regulation that would effectively ban all non-compete agreements. It would even require employers to formally rescind any non-compete agreements that are already in place. Industry attorney Bill Josey briefly addressed this for members last week in our monthly training webinar. |
Be NiceI like the movie Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze. OK, I admit I watched because I had a crush on Sam Elliot. Sharing Jobs with PartnersDear Nicky, A trading partner just asked me for help on a role that she has had for the past several months. It's hard to believe the client doesn't have other options in play at this point, possibly even some of the same candidates I would have recruited. It just doesn't seem like there is a high likelihood of success in filling the role now. Is it normal for partners to wait this long before asking for help? Hoarding in Hesperia |
InternationalismWelcome all NPA Members! I am pleased to have been asked to write this Chairman’s Corner for this week’s Vignette. As many of you know, I am the EMEA Director for NPA, a role I have held for a couple of years now, following on from being the UK & Ireland Area Leader previously. Being based in the UK as I am, the topic I wanted to cover with you all is “Internationalism”. This, according to the dictionary, means a cluster of ideas derived from the belief that international progress is possible, where progress is defined as movement toward increasing levels of harmonious cooperation between communities. |

See you in the Big Apple! We are busy making plans for our annual Holiday Networking event in New York City! This year's event will be on Thursday, December 8th, starting with a catered lunch and an afternoon program. |
The Disconnected Recruiter and NPAworldwideAbout two weeks ago, I booked two client meetings in New York City. On the way in, I had a lot of calls that needed to be done, so I decided to take an Uber. It was a big process day: interviews, logistics, offer discussions, a lot moving parts. I wanted to stay close and be available. Since I gave up my NYC drop-office a couple of years ago, my plan was to sit at a little coffee shop I often frequent, check messages, and make some calls. My client meetings were confirmed and were at the end of the day. All was going along well until…I realized a few minutes too late that I had left my mobile phone behind in the Uber!!!!!!!!! To make things worse, I had no laptop. I had made the decision before leaving home that all of the day’s activities could be handled by my mobile device. WOW, THIS WAS NOT HAPPENING TO ME! But it was!!!!! |
Getting More Attention on JobsDear Nicky, I post a lot of jobs, but lately don’t seem to be getting enough help. What am I doing wrong? No Traction in Trowbridge |
Properly Introducing Your Split PartnerRoman Duty is guest-writing this issue's From the Chair. Greetings, fellow NPA Members! It’s an honor to write this month for the Vignette. As I debated on a topic to touch on with you all, I received a candidate via an NPA candidate partner that was qualified enough for me to call them instantly. When I reached the candidate and introduced myself, the candidate was confused. This person had not heard my name, vaguely remembered responding to an email from the other recruiter, couldn’t recall the job, and I spent time overcoming this candidate’s skepticism. |

Back by Popular DemandBack by popular demand ... I’ve developed an assessment and case studies that help hiring managers think critically about the jobs they need to fill. The 4A’s of Talent Acquisition is a simple assessment focused on the one question hiring managers must consider when bringing a job to market: How long will it likely take to fill this job? Click here to download a copy - you can use this as a conversation-starter with new or potential clients as an activity they can do on their own or as part of a "complimentary" offer that we can share to demonstrate market knowledge. |

From a 9/11 Survivor, Thoughts & Prayers On This 21st AnniversaryI thank the Lord for the gift of my life and I pray for those lost in New York City, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. I think of their families and hope the years have eased the pain of their loss. I think of the lingering health issues and the loss of life that still touches many survivors and first responders in NYC. Over the years, and still today, I think about the two seemingly routine events that saved my own life: A subway delayed at 14th Street, and a request from my office to pick up doughnuts for the 10AM sales meeting. Both events resulting in me pushing the elevator button as the first plane hit WTC1. Were these delaying events part of the serendipity of life or the intercession of the Lord? I suspect I will ponder this question the rest of my life. |

Let's Talk About Legal ServicesAs previously addressed, NPAworldwide has done some basic research and now we are asking members to refer great providers to their fellow members. It should be noted that some geographies are more difficult to solve for than others. Europe, Asia and Latin America are not as member-rich and there are many counties with different rules, laws, and languages. We will depend upon members to make recommendations in these spots. Client FeedbackDear Nicky, I am usually a job-side recruiter, relying on partners to provide candidates. Recently, I had some extra time so I working on providing candidates for my NPAworldwide partners. I found that not a lot of members have what I call client control. That is not the way I like to work. Is there a good way for me to get that information upfront, without sounding bossy? As we know, the hiring manager is likely giving the job order to everyone and anyone who wants to see it. I set expectations upfront with my client so I know I will get feedback, and I also make it clear that I need to know where they are sending the job(s). Controlling in Calvin

Feedback Matters! My sweet father-in-law has been in and out of the hospital for the last three months. I can tell you for sure that not all facilities are equal, nor are all service providers. Along the way, I've given shoutouts to some caregivers and some not-so-pleasant corrective suggestions to others. At times our family has been very frustrated and at others, we've been exceedingly pleased. Being fully engaged with his service providers has proved invaluable to his quality of care and overall satisfaction. |
NPAmarketplace TrainingDear Nicky, I have been playing around a bit in NPAmarketplace. There is some good technology there. I missed the trainings that were offered early on, and am wondering what kind of training resources are available. Learning in Lenox |

Auto-Deletion of Inactive Recruiter AccountsQuick reminder to all owners and recruiters: about a year ago we began implementing some new security measures to reduce the number of inactive accounts on our sites, especially NPAmarketplace. If a recruiter fails to log in to NPAcentral for more than 180 days after their account was created, the account will be automatically deleted. This will also trigger deletions from NPAmarketplace. We have been handling this manually for quite a long time, but now have the ability to streamline this task. |
NPAworldwide Notification EmailsDear Nicky, I used to get email notifications when I had new candidate applications from the job board, but I haven't seen any lately. What's going on? No News in Newberry |
NPA Job Board: Your Contingent Partner in PlacementFinding talent is difficult. Speed to close on open positions is becoming extended. Some jobs are just not built to split…low fees, too many competitors, or strange one-off situations make it difficult to get support from your NPAworldwide partners. The NPA Job Board is a great option for these situations. We discourage the use of the NPA Job Board where you have partners investing time to source candidates. Please don’t waste your NPA partners' time. |
Small Gatherings and the Essence of NPAworldwideThe Essence of NPA—I hope to popularize the phrase over the next few months. This endearing phrase came out of our recent Global Conference in Texas by way of my dear friend and Chairman’s Award Recipient, Laura Schmieder. As I mentioned in a recent Chairman’s Corner, the Essence of NPA is the people. And one of the most efficient ways to get to know your fellow members are at small informal get-togethers. A lot can be discussed over a cup of coffee, lunch, drink after work or even stopping by a member’s office. |

US/Canada: Act NOW for lifetime savings with ChatterworksChatterworks, a sourcing and contact platform that can help you reduce your reliance on LinkedIn, offers *massive* pricing discounts for NPAworldwide members. Their database currently contains verified profiles for more than 400 million US and Canadian candidates. Later this summer, they are adding on a candidate engagement feature. If you've listened to Batman either in Fort Worth or on our recent webinar, you'll know this is a platform that he uses and recommends as well. |
Non-Traditional Fee SplitsAbout a month ago, I received a call from a member who has been with NPAworldwide for a couple of years and in the industry for about ten years. The member explained to me that she had two great sales roles, competitively priced, yet she was getting very little NPAworldwide candidate-side (CS) submissions. After further discussion, I learned that although this position was with a long-time client, the member had no sales placement experience. The member took on the search with the hope of closing it with NPA CS help. Great strategy!! This is why we are in NPAworldwide. |
Posting Records to the NPAworldwide Job BoardAs we transition to a new job board, please be reminded of the following posting requirements for using the NPAworldwide Job Board. Some of these are NPAworldwide policy while others are requirements from the various aggregators we use. Jobs that do not follow these requirements will be excluded from all advertising efforts. |
Notifying NPAworldwide About Ownership ChangesDear Nicky, I'm the owner of my firm and I'm going to share some of the equity with a couple of key staff members. Does that impact anything with my NPAworldwide membership? Equity in Evangeline |

Let's Talk About Accounting & Bookkeeping ServicesAs previously addressed, NPAworldwide has done some basic research and now we are asking members to refer great providers to their fellow members. It should be noted that some geographies are more difficult to solve for than others. Europe, Asia and Latin America are not as member-rich and there are many counties with different rules, laws, and languages. We will depend upon members to make recommendations in these spots. Here is our first topic: |

Advertising JobsMembers are reminded that the "Permission to Advertise" field MUST be followed whenever you advertise a partner's job. No means no - you may not post, share or advertise that job ANYWHERE. |
Job Board ApplicationsAre you posting on the Job Board but NOT receiving any applications? Here are a couple of quick tips that might help you out:
|
Money Back GuaranteesTo address the inconsistency and possible inaccuracy in how members are populating the Money Back Guarantee field in NPAmarketplace (Add A Job page), we have introduced new logic to that field. |
NPAmarketplace & NPAworldwide BasicsThe backbone of NPAworldwide is and will always be its members and recruiters, as well as the staff who help us all work effectively and efficiently. Building relationships leads to information exchange as well as split placements. HOW do you find your potential trading partners and industry experts? Every new member and recruiter is trained in using NPAmarketplace and NPA Central to find potential trading partners…as well as attending meetings and Practice Group calls. They don’t know anyone in NPAworldwide so they absolutely depend on our tools, whether it's finding out when meetings or trading calls or webinars might be OR seeing jobs and candidates OR finding out who are the specialists. |
Remove Old Job Postings from NPAmarketplacePlease review your job postings on NPAmarketplace on a monthly basis, or more frequently if warranted. Jobs that have been filled, closed, taken offline, or for which you are no longer actively recruiting, should be unshared or removed from NPAmarketplace. To deactivate your job(s), do the following: |
Setting the Default Currency in NPAmarketplaceDid you know you can set a default currency in NPAmarketplace? The default for all users is USD, but you can customize the salary to automatically apply a different currency standard to all of your posted candidate and job records. So Australian members who typically work with Australian candidates and Australian jobs, can set the default to Australian dollars. Those in Europe can change the default to euros. |

Owner Reminder: Adding New Recruiters |
Adding New RecruitersDear Nicky, I have hired a new recruiter and need to add her to Marketplace BUT I don't see the "Add a Recruiter" page anymore. Where do I do that? Hiring in Holton |
Adding New RecruitersMembers are reminded that we have a new process for adding new recruiters into our system. |
Zooming Your Browser In/OutIf you have your browser set at higher than 100% ("zooming in"), you may notice some fields or features of Marketplace don't work correctly or aren't visible to you. For example, if you set your browser to 200% size, the Marketplace drop-down menus for Partners, Candidates, Jobs and Splits will stop working - this is true in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Zooming "out" to something less than 200% will restore the menu functionality. |
Resume FormattingAs more members have recently been working with candidates, we are seeing an increase in tech support requests related to difficulty parsing resumes. In almost every instance, the resume in question is full of logos, pictures, tables, or other images. The resume parser can ONLY read text. Resumes that are filled with images will not parse correctly. |
Converting PDFs to WordA fairly common support request we receive at NPAworldwide is regarding PDF resumes that won't upload to Marketplace. If your candidate has embedded images, tables, odd fonts, or other problematic data in the PDF, you'll likely encounter difficulties getting that resume/CV uploaded. You may even have trouble opening the file. As more candidates use mobile devices for their career searches, we think that PDF versions of resumes are likely to increase, since they can easily be stored and opened on a mobile device. |
Recruiter Contact Information and the NPAworldwide Job BoardImportant reminder to members: If you are posting jobs on the NPAworldwide Job Board, you may NOT include your contact information in ANY of the description fields (What Makes This a Great Job, Job Description, or Qualifications). This would potentially allow a candidate to circumvent the Job Board, meaning NPAworldwide would not receive the required placement fee. |
Posting Records to the Job BoardA reminder to those of you who are posting jobs on Marketplace AND the Job Board. Please be sure you are NOT including private notes or recruiter-to-recruiter comments in the Job Description, Qualifications, or Why Is This a Great Opportunity fields. These are PUBLIC fields that ARE shared on the Job Board. This means job seekers are seeing information that is really not suitable for a public audience. |
Best Format for Resumes/CVsSometimes candidates will convert their resume/CV to PDF format before sending it to a recruiter. This is typically because they don't want anyone to make changes to their resume, and believe that PDF is a "read-only" document. A PDF file CAN be edited with the correct software, so this is a false assumption by job seekers. |
NPAmarketplace Handbook AvailableIf you are not already aware of this, there is a detailed training Handbook available for the NPAmarketplace. Those who like to learn by reading will appreciate this tool. It's also helpful as a reference for features you may not frequently use. |
Target Date Calendar for JobsWhen creating jobs on NPAmarketplace, there is a "Target Date" field that has been the source of some confusion. Typically, we get these questions:
|
New Alert Option to ConsiderDear Nicky, I regularly post my jobs and I wish there was a way to easily notify all my partners when a job has been filled, closed, put on hold, etc. I would hate for anyone to waste time sourcing candidates for a job that really doesn't exist. Can this be considered as a future enhancement? Ideas from Ionia |
An AI Tool That Makes You a Better WriterAre you ready to take your business, marketing and sales efforts up a notch? If so then I have great news for YOU! There is an AI content-creation tool called Jasper that can help with all of this. It's perfect because not only does it create blog posts but also questions on Quora or Reddit. It can even help write unique email subject lines - which means more engagement from potential leads. If you attended Ryan Kovach's session about Actionable Marketing Strategies on a Budget in Fort Worth, you'll recall his enthusiasm for Jasper as well. |
Support Services SuggestionsHello NPAworldwide owners and recruiters, The Board of Directors has asked staff to invest some time and energy to find solutions for service provider needs that most members are likely to find beneficial or necessary. Many of you have solid solutions in place for these needs, others are in search of new providers, looking for increased performance, or interested in reduced cost for the work required. Here are some of the categories the Board asked for staff to prioritize. Please reply to this thread with others that would be valuable to you if something has been missed. |
Flying the NPA FlagGreetings, NPA! Spring is in the air for those of us in the northern hemisphere. Joining NPA almost 10 years ago has enabled me to maintain my individual firm identity, while concurrently being part of something much bigger. I came to learn shortly after joining NPA that one of the best kept secrets of NPA membership is FLYING THE NPA FLAG. In fact, for the past several years all of my client acquisition initiates have been NPA-centric. In operation, I lead with, and go to market flying the NPA flag. |
Logging in to NPAworldwide SystemsWe have had an increase in members asking how to log in to our members-only websites, so here is a quick video tutorial: |
Missing Partners on NPAmarketplaceDear Nicky, I was told by a trading partner that they did not find me in NPAmarketplace searching on manufacturing. That is my specialty area; what do I need to do to fix this? Lost in L'Anse |

The Essence of NPAGreetings. As I consider all of the great ideas that came out of 2022 NPA Global Conference last week, it would be easy to write about topics such as; operational best practices, technology and member achievement. In the alternative, I would rather discuss what I feel is the greatest value of in-person meetings: the opportunity to make new friends and to renew old friendships. I must say, I was very much moved by a phrase I heard last week – “The Essence of NPA.” I have never heard the phrase since joining NPA almost 10 years ago. The meaning behind this phrase simply and poignantly defines the true NPA experience. |
Marketing NPAworldwide Size and ScopeWhile attending the Global Conference, several members were very interested in marketing NPAworldwide to their clients with a map of member locations. While that seems easy enough, I can tell you the minute it is published it is out of date. For example, last month we had 20 new members join and 9 members depart. It is never going to be accurate for more than a few days |
Canadian Executive Search Market Adapting to Change and Moving ForwardDespite the changes that the pandemic has wrought, recruiters in the Great White North have responded well. But competition for assignments is fierce and candidates are in the driver’s seat. To land the top prospects, companies must go beyond compensation to win – and retain – the best and brightest. |
New York City Issues Guidance on Required Salary Disclosures in Job PostingsNew York City employers be aware: A new “NYC Salary Disclosure Law” will soon require employers to include a good faith salary range for every job, promotion, or transfer opportunity advertised. While the NYC Salary Disclosure Law is scheduled to take effect on May 15, 2022, it may now be pushed out to November 1, 2022 due to a recently introduced bill that would amend the new law, including the effective date. |
Cross-Border Placement: Rene Abgrall Recruiting and 733 RecruitingOne of the benefits of NPAworldwide membership is the ability to promote an international capability to your clients, serve your clients outside of their home markets, maximize your firm’s business opportunity by spending your time where the jobs are, and avoiding down economic situations in your home market. NPAworldwide defines “cross-border” splits as deals where the partners are operating in different countries. Here is a story about members that completed a cross-border split. |

Masked Candidates on NPAmarketplaceAs part of the recent data migration from Matchmaker to NPAmarketplace, we migrated each firm's existing preference for whether or not to "blind" their candidates. So if your candidates are blinded in Matchmaker, they are set to "masked" in NPAmarketplace. |
Does anyone look at jobs?Dear Nicky, I have to tell you I am getting a bit frustrated with posting jobs. It feels like no one is exporting these days. Used to be if you post them, they will come. Now, nothing. Pointless in Polkton |
New Records in NPAmarketplace Beginning April 1We will have completed the process of allowing access and providing basic training to all members on the new NPAmarketplace by the end of March 2022. We are excited to have a new member-to-member sharing tool and we want to avoid duplication, wasted time, and confusion for those counting on NPAworldwide to find partners, jobs to work, and candidates for jobs. |

Greetings From the Chair!Greetings! As I commence my two-year term as your Board Chair, I first wish to thank my good friend Jason Elias (now serving as Immediate Past Chair) for his dedication not only to NPA but also to our industry. Strategically, Jason marshaled NPA through a global pandemic, while also always keeping his watchful eye on creating membership value. I would embarrass Jason if I listed his awards and achievements at NPA and in our industry. I will simply say that this network is much better today because of dedicated leaders such as Jason. Thank you mate! You remain an inspiration to us all. |

What A Good Candidate May Look Like

Support for UkraineAs many know, we have NPAworldwide members, member staff, and global members with family in Ukraine. Julia Tupchiy and her firm Skillers are directly impacted by the current military actions in and around Ukraine. |
Wage Disclosure LawsThere are too many salary disclosure laws in the US to fully understand. Compliance is difficult, and the penalties for non-compliance are severe. |
Marketing Your MembershipIf you have not yet used the NPAworldwideWORKS.com website to market your membership take a look at how simple it would be to share this link with a client or prospective new employer target. |
Have You Heard About NPAworldwide? You Should! If you're not following Tom Sorensen's blog, you are missing out. Here's a recent post he wrote that really does a great job educating clients and candidates about NPAworldwide: |
Proxies and VotingDear Nicky, I've been seeing and hearing a lot about proxies and voting lately. Is that something I need to pay attention to? Olivet Owner |
NPAmarketplace to Launch in March!Exciting times! We are getting very close to the launch of NPAmarketplace. This tool will replace Matchmaker when everyone has been given access and trained. We are working on data transitions to bring over existing records. That data transition is taking a long time to get it done right. As soon as that is completed, we will be in a position to start the process of launching. Here’s the plan: |
Staff Focus for 2022While 2021 was an outstanding year for NPAworldwide, I am a firm believer in “you can always do better.” So to that end, we are in the process of making some changes to how we do our work here at NPAworldwide. |
Passing the BatonThis is my last Chairman’s Corner - as I hand over the reins to my good friend, the incomparable Jim Lyons. I hope you will indulge me a few parting words. What an honour it is to be part of NPAworldwide. There is not a day goes by where NPA is not a part of my life and I am not alone here. From making splits with partners, learning new ideas from calls and training sessions, sharing stories and tips with colleagues or even just having a chat to friends I have made. |
NPAmarketplace - Record Migration PlanWe are getting close to launching the new NPAmarketplace! One of the major tasks that needs to be completed is migrating records from Matchmaker. Here is what is planned: |
NPAmarketplace Arriving Soon!We have been at work for over two years to find a high-quality, forward-facing, sharing platform for members. We spent a year studying the vendors and solutions available and another year working with Oorwin Labs, our selected partner, to specify and build a tool that meets the needs of the network and our members. |
Splits and BrokerageDear Nicky, I am a newer member, and I'm a bit confused about a couple of items. First, if I submit a candidate or a job directly to a trading partner, do I also have to post it on the system? Secondly, if I make a placement with a partner, and neither the job nor the candidate were posted on the system, is brokerage still owed? Perplexed in Pinconning |

2022 Chairman's Award WinnerThis is the final Chairman's Corner for the Year. The Year 2021 has been a mixed year—with the global pandemic on one hand, yet a very busy and mostly successful year for recruiters. The network has performed well and there have been loads of splits and job board placements. We also have a record amount of funds in reserves and an exciting new sharing tool to replace Matchmaker.
|
What Does Member Engagement Mean? Each NPA member works their business, their desk, their NPA membership differently…and that is okay as long as we are NOT being detrimental to other NPA member/owners. Remember that - WE all own NPAworldwide, it’s not owned by THEM or HIM or HER or a CORPORATE ENTITY…its owned by all and each NPA Member. |
No Action on JobsDear Nicky, I have a lot of jobs, but don’t seem to be getting much action. I update them on a regular basis, so not sure what else I should be doing. Help in Hesperia |

Sliding DoorsLast week I won the “Recruitment Leader of the Year” award from Talint International for the second year in a row. Such an honour and very humbled. Circle of TrustConfession - I am a big Robert De Niro fan. I especially love when he takes his tough guy persona into a comedy situation like in the Meet The Parents movies. Remember when he is grilling the hapless Ben Stiller (aka Gaylord Fokker) about whether he can enter his "Circle of Trust"? |

How to Hard Refresh or Clear the Cache on Your ComputerPeriodically, it's a good idea to manually clear the cache from your website browser. Cached pages are simply stored versions of web pages that you visit. Storing a copy helps the page load more quickly the next time you visit the page. The downside to always loading cached pages is that if the web page gets changed or updated, your browser might still be loading the old (cached) version. This can lead to a variety of errors or even a non-responsive site. |

Exploring New OpportunitiesDear Nicky, Thought I would share a pro tip I learned this week. I logged into a practice group call, not in my niche, and wow, I was impressed! My own narrow niche has been slow. I was surprised to hear from so many partners - some had jobs that were niche-focused and others had jobs from A-Z within a company. What I learned was that it's valuable to mix it up from time to time and find out what is happening in other sectors. It's easy to think that *everything* is slow when you are so focused on your own niche. Looking at a broader picture showed me there is plenty of work to be had. It was an eye-opener for me. Update on Ft. Worth Global ConferenceThe future of face-to-face meetings around the world is unknown. We all long for the opportunity to meet with friends, family and business associates as we once did. While we are unsure of when travel will return to pre-Covid levels, we are planning for that day. Certainly the discovery of an effective vaccine will allow the world some increased comfort and perhaps the ability to travel and meet again. Is This A Split? Working Job Orders in NPAworldwideToday's discussion revolves around obtaining job orders and when a split is due to your partner. In our first case, which is the correct answer? Agency A sends or discusses a job order with Agency B. B takes no action. Subsequently B discovers the job order independently through normal marketing efforts and makes a placement. A. This is NOT a split placement, as long as, B did not use any information provided by A to acquire the job order. B. This IS a split placement since A initially informed B regardless. C. Owner Responsibilities in NPAworldwideIt is now over 20 years since I last practised law and so I am a bit rusty. One of the concepts that I still recall from contract law is the "Indoor Management rule." This provides certainty to people dealing with a company that they cannot just say, "Oh sorry, Donny wasn't authorised to do that." |

Are You Being a Good Exporter?Dear Nicky, |
Laws for Recruiters to Know |
Be Kind to Your Future SelfHope you are safe and well. Recently I had a really interesting conversation with a psychologist friend on procrastination. We were discussing why some people (like me) too often leave tasks (eg proposals and reports) to the last minute. A fast-approaching deadline makes matters more stressful and rarely leads to better results. We discussed a strategy of doing smaller tasks regularly and then rewarding yourself when the job is done early, eg taking time off. He described this as “being kind to your future self.” This really resonated with me - not in an altruistic “do-goody“ way but a practical one where there is clear self-benefit. |

Increase your market share and do more business right now – brand new, free toolkit available now for NPAworldwide membersSince the start of Covid19, the recruitment and staffing sector has been hit fairly hard. That is clear. However, what is also clear is that with every fall, there is always a bounce back, and this is exactly what we are starting to see across nearly all sectors. |
Everyone Benefits from CollaborationEach year in Australia, the recruitment industry holds a glamorous gala awards night—a bit like the Oscars for recruitment. Sadly this year, it was livestreamed on Facebook instead. Yours truly was nominated for Recruitment Leader of the Year and am proud to say that I won. |
Too Many Unqualified CandidatesDear Nicky, I was on a Practice Group call the other day and mentioned a job I have that is not posted to Marketplace. I did not post as I don’t want to get inundated with candidates that are not a fit. A member on the call mentioned that is not a best practice and to set expectations upfront. Too Many Candidates in Tilden |

What About Bounty Jobs or Similar Services?Case #1 TRUE or FALSE: A direct client/agency or candidate/agency relationship is required prior to submitting job orders/assignments or candidates to a trading partner. |
Make Your Resume Parse-ableCustom fonts, logos, and graphic images on your resume may make you feel smart and unique. The bad news…the machines reading your resume don’t like what you have done. Special features in a resume can confuse the parsing software and do not allow the data to be properly extracted or read from your document. Avoid non-standard designs, colors, and charts on your resume. |
Developing a New NicheDear Nicky, My business has been tied closely to the oil and gas sector for a long time. As you can imagine, with oil prices so low I started to feel the hurt, then COVID-19 happened and things went from bad to worse. I hear from others that you can “re-invent” yourself with NPAworldwide; you can go after more business, new business, international business, or even work with others on their jobs. Can you tell me where to start? Branching Out in Branch County |
Reach Out and Touch SomeoneWhat if I told you that I could get you one warm call with a potential client a week? A client that loves recruiters, a client that is happy to pay your fees; a client who will appreciate you working with them? Sounds good? Well that is one of the key benefits of our network. Everyone accepted wants to split with you. They hopefully love recruiters (given that’s what they are), they are happy to pay your fees as you are helping them make a placement that would otherwise not have happened and they appreciate you as you have either made their client / candidate happy. |
NPAworldwide is a Good InvestmentHere is an infographic from an industry publication on how recruitment firms spend their budgets. NPAworldwide touches each one of these categories and does so very cost effectively. |

Getting Help with My Posted JobsDear Nicky, I have been posting my jobs in Marketplace and not getting a lot of help. What am I doing wrong? I would think right now would be the best time to fill jobs. Need Help in Nester |
Some Ideas for Working "on" Your BusinessFirstly, hope you are all safe and well. 2020 has so far been a year of challenges across a number of fronts, not least economically. The recruitment industry is always at the pointy end of macroeconomic change and I know many of us are feeling this acutely right now. We have 10% of the number of job orders we had in February. If it is any consolation, recruiters also feel the benefits of upturns. Companies will need to re-skill and grow quickly and we are positioned to help them do that. |

Sharing Retainers and Engagement FeesDear Nicky, I have a retainer with my client and sometimes get engagement fees up front with other clients. I do not feel I need to share these with my NPAworldwide split partners. Is it right to do that? Stingy in Steubenville |
An Old School Connection Leads to New Split PartnersBeing a member of NPAworldwide not only improves my business bottom line, I also meet and make a lot of new friends from around the world. I have done splits with members from Africa for a client in Asia using a candidate from Europe. NPAworldwide is global and I have been a member since 2011. I have always been involved with NPAworldwide volunteer work. I was appointed Members Manager for North Asia from 2011 till 2017, a totally voluntary role serving the Asian community for a total of 6 years. I am still volunteering but in a different capacity. |
How Well Do You Know the Importer and Exporter Rules?Candidate Ownership A candidate you previously imported, but did not place, responds to one of your job postings for a subsequent opportunity. Which is true? A. You’ll still be working this candidate as a split placement; you previously have the candidate from a trading partner. B. No split
|
I love surprises, except...Well, it *was* recently my birthday, not a milestone number but given what has happened the last few months, every birthday is worth celebrating. I love surprises especially for my birthday. I equally dislike surprises at work. You know the feeling when you reach for your phone and see the name of a candidate who is due to start work tomorrow or a client calls you 20 minutes after an interview is meant to have started. These are the surprises we can all do without. |
Brokerage Percentages ReminderWe get asked on occasion what the brokerage percentages are. This is more frequently a question by newer members or those that are using a service like the Job Board for the very first time. |
Glimmers of Hope in a PandemicDear Leland, Thanks for writing! I agree that the overwhelming amount of negative news isn’t helping anyone’s mental health. While it would be silly to pretend everything is fine and normal, there ARE reasons to remain hopeful and optimistic. There are certainly pockets in healthcare, warehousing, distribution, logistics and a few others where hiring activity is still solid. Many clients are continuing to press forward with interview plans, even if they are delaying onboarding. Candidates and hiring managers are more available for conversations than they have been for a long time. This means that great candidates and smart companies may have a unique opportunity to upgrade their situations right now. Most members are reporting steep declines in open jobs, but some are reporting that the smaller volume of jobs is leading to a higher fill rate. On top of that, NPAworldwide has an annual budget that is adopted by the Board of Directors. This budget includes planned income for brokerage, which is a direct reflection of split placement activity. This year’s budget is based on brokerage of just over $7,100 per week. I’m pleased to say that going back over the past 8 weeks, to the beginning of the pandemic, there has only been ONE week in which new acceptance activity was BELOW this target. That was the week ending March 27th, and the acceptance activity was 86% of goal, so lower than planned but hardly catastrophic. The week prior (ending March 20th), members reported acceptances totaling 188% of the brokerage goal. For the seven weeks since, the totals have been 106%, 100%, 116%, 113%, 103%, and 108%. A small number of reported acceptances will result in fall-offs or no-starts, but your network is well-positioned to survive … and thrive. Actual brokerage cash-in for April was about 87% of goal, with some clients paying more slowly than normal. The membership pipeline also remains strong with steady interest by prospective members. We enrolled 13 new firms in April – take some time to get to know them! Make them feel welcome and look for split placement opportunities. NPAworldwide members have always relied on each other to survive during challenging economic cycles. This time is no different. Nicky Send letters to: nanderson@npaworldwide.com |
Glimmers of Hope in a PandemicDear Nicky, I’m tired of all the doom and gloom about the pandemic and the economy. I’ve been recruiting long enough to have survived a downturn or two, so I know we’re going to get through this one, too. Is there any data that NPAworldwide can share to help bolster my confidence? What to Do When Recruiters Leave Your FirmI’m sure most of you have processes that you follow whenever you have staff departures. If updating NPAworldwide is not part of your regular departure process, please make sure that happens going forward. If you are not keeping your staff list updated in Marketplace, you run the risk of former recruiters still having active logins.

Reducing Credit Risk (US Members)For US members, one way to reduce your credit risk with clients is by becoming a "secured" creditor. Here's a roughly 17-minute video from Wilson Cole at Adams, Evens & Ross that walks you through the steps you need to take to become secured. |
Has COVID-19 Made Recruiting Less Important?Good article here from ERE reminding all of us that many RECRUITING activities - branding, pipeline development, relationship-building - are NOT on hold (and should not be). Always Look on the Bright Side of LifeI woke up at 5 am the other day to the sound of laughter with my 10 year-old son watching TV. Curious as to what was causing cacophony—was it his favourite Disney show? the latest sitcom? "I already have that candidate in my database..."Dear Nicky, A member sent me a resume and I remembered the name, so I looked in my database and have that candidate. Quality MattersI wanted to talk about quality in one of my last Vignette articles. Jason Elias will be taking over authorship of the column later in March. He is smarter and funnier so you should be in good hands and entertained. I am passionate about quality! In my view, quality is the primary driver on how we differentiate ourselves. This is true as individual members and as a network. We have quality standards within our firm (WilliamCharles Search Group) and we promote those standards as part of our branding pitch. Quality standardization is challenging within our network. Why?

10 Ways to Add More ValueOur industry is more competitive than ever! This crowded recruiter marketplace is the result of two factors. First, we are 8-9 years into a reasonably good economy for recruiters. Secondarily, we continue to be in a candidate-short market causing employers to need us. It might not be this year… but when the downturn hits, it will put some recruiters out of business. |

Are Your Images Properly Licensed?I've just read an article from a meetings-related colleague who is in some hot water over using an improperly-sourced image in a blog post. In short, her business failed to follow its own policy regarding photo/image use and inadvertently posted a blog that featured an image that was downloaded from Google search results. Turns out that image was copyrighted and not available for public use. She has received a cease-and-desist letter and is likely to pay a significant fine even though she removed the image immediately upon receiving notice of the error. |

Cross-Border Split: Avisant Search and Premier PlacementOne of the benefits of NPAworldwide membership is the ability to promote an international capability to your clients, serve your clients outside of their home markets, maximize your firm’s business opportunity by spending your time where the jobs are, and avoiding down economic situations in your home market. NPAworldwide defines “cross-border” splits as deals where the partners are operating in different countries. Here is a story about members that completed a cross-border split.

The Path to an Effective Pricing StrategyI read a good article in The Staffing Stream (from Staffing Industry Analysts) this week about how to talk about your service in terms of value instead of price, and some pricing strategies recruiters can borrow from other industries. There are some great ideas to consider for your businesses. Here's an excerpt: |
The 4 A's of Talent AcquisitionJim Lyons is this week's guest writer. On a recent project with Mike Sudermann, I got an idea for a new client development tool. I’ve developed an assessment and case studies that help hiring managers think critically about the jobs they need to fill. The 4A’s of Talent Acquisition is a simple assessment focused on the one question hiring managers must consider when bringing a job to market: How long will it likely take to fill this job? |

Talking to Candidates About NPAworldwideDear Nicky, One of my candidates recently called me, upset that she'd been contacted by another NPA partner who saw her details on Marketplace. Her job search is confidential and she was really worried that her resume was posted on some public site. I know our sharing site is private and members-only, but obviously she didn't understand that. What should I do to avoid a repeat scenario? Puzzled in Paw Paw |
Let's Talk Money!Laura LaBine is this week's guest writer. There are many rewarding aspects to why we work, such as the satisfaction of connecting people to their dream job or celebrating a successful placement with a partner, but at the end of the day money pays the bills. It’s always a good idea to have a conversation with your partner early and often to discuss payment terms. This doesn’t just refer to getting paid by the client, but also how we pay each other. Since some payment methods can take time to process or set up, it can be beneficial to set expectations with each other at time of placement. We owe it to each other to be super transparent and cooperative in communicating payment terms. |
Hall of Fame Highlight - Richard BryantGet to Know Hall of Fame Member Richard Bryant, Bryant Associates, Inc. Why You Should Volunteer with NPAworldwideHave you heard the phrase, “time is money” or “stay close to the money?” I would argue that time might be our most valuable commodity. This naturally begs the question why volunteer if you are not getting paid?

Which Importers Should I Work With?Dear Nicky, There are a few long-time members in NPA who work a narrow niche. As an exporter I try to help them, but every time I submit a candidate they tell me, "I already know them, thanks." Then I hear later they complain they don’t get any help. They do post lots of jobs, but I'm not sure I am spending my time wisely working with them. Sourcing in Saline |
Focus = SuccessSuccess in our business right now requires laser focus on the right stuff! Flashback 25 years and our business was much simpler – let’s face it the world was much simpler -- but I’ll leave that for someone else’s blog. Recruiting 25 years ago… we used the phone book, paper job order/candidate files along with lists and directories. It was not easy but the path to success was simple and straight forward….through the phone. The only distraction was the person next to you who talked too much. Remember those times? |

Outdated and Incomplete Profiles on NPAmarketplaceDear Nicky, I was looking for trading partners that do automotive and was surprised there were only 58 in all of NPA. Then I looked at automotive jobs and found that the people posting the jobs were almost totally different from the people who appeared in my search results. Why is that? Mismatched in Millington |

Who Can Use the NPAworldwide Job Board?Dear Nicky, I work with an agency outside of NPAworldwide. He has a tough job, and I'm wondering if I can post it to our Job Board to help him out? Curious in Coleman |
Pick Up the Phone!Today's guest writer is Jim Lyons, JD, CPC As you know, the internet and social media make it fairly easy to find candidates today. It is not like years ago in recruitment when you had to call into a company and use a suitable pretext to try to find out who was doing a certain job. Yes, that type of recruitment theatre is gone. Let’s face it, today it is easy to find the right person. The problem is: it is easy for everyone to find that same right person. |

When to Share Information with ExportersDear Nicky, I’m an exporter and have noticed that importers sometimes let me know that my candidate is in play at different times during the process. Some importers tell me before a phone interview is scheduled, while others don’t tell me until after an in-person interview. Very rarely, I have found out after a placement is made. While it’s always great to hear about placement activity, I’d rather know on a more timely basis. Is there a rule or policy about sharing this information? Exporting in Ecorse |

Competitive Intelligence GatheringDear Nicky, One of my clients has asked me to quote a project that I have not done before. I'm struggling to figure out how to price it, and am wondering if it's OK to ask my NPAworldwide partners for their advice and assistance. Pricing in Prescott |
Take a More Realistic Job Order by Asking the Right QuestionsAre your clients stuck on a list of unrealistic requirements? More times than not, organizations are fixated on lists of requirements. This might be a software, or an industry experience or other skill related to a bullet point on a job description. Of course, you can never tell or direct your clients to change their approach. This directive level of influence is usually limited to a doctor, lawyer, CPA or clergy. Recruiters or even search consultants, not so much. |
Low-Quality CandidatesDear Nicky I am fairly new to NPAworldwide and posted some jobs. I must say I am a bit disappointed in the quality of candidates I am receiving. How can I get better response? Need Help in Newaygo |
Missing Images in EmailIf you're noticing that email messages don't seem to display correctly in your inbox, or that there are large empty white "boxes" where you should actually see an image, there may be an easy fix. Add the sender of the email to your Safe Senders list - that way, the images will automatically download in your email. |
Jason Kaminsky - Cause for ApplauseJim Lyons (#1027) of LHI Executive Search LLC in New York City, NY, USA, nominated Jason Kaminsky (#1368) of bizjobz, LLC in Plainview, NY, USA, in the Attitude & Teamwork category. |
Be BoldThe road to riches is never found on the path of least resistance! I believe this is true in life but there is no profession where this concept is more important than recruiting. While good things can be achieved through social media and using email effectively – I see too many recruiters who use this as a path of least resistance versus picking up the phone. This was reinforced during a conversation recently with fellow member Jim Lyons. Jim is passionate about targeted recruiting – perhaps Jim is our next guest blogger on the subject! Anyway…Jim and I agree on the point that the art of picking up the phone and engaging a candidate or client seems to have faded from the forefront of recruiting for many. The most successful recruiters are winning through person-to-person contact! |

Exporters Ghosting MeDear Nicky, Some exporters will call and ask for more information on my jobs. I spend some time educating them on what I am looking for, they thank me, and one of two things happens:

Find More Money in 2019 - It's Out There!“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Wayne Gretzky I’m guessing everyone is looking for ways to “take more shots” in 2019! In my experience, great years occur when you work more orders and market more candidates. Not every deal is going to come together so spend less time wringing your hands over those deals that fell apart. Think about how you can continue to push more send outs (first interviews) into the pipeline! Your success today is less about your pipeline and more about new activity that you have initiated. Don’t be the bird that spends half its time sitting on a nest and waiting for eggs to hatch! |
Rene Abgrall - Cause for ApplauseColleen Doerr (#3380) of Professional Outlook, Inc. in Grandville, MI, USA, nominated Rene Abgrall (#7399) of Rene Abgrall Recruiting in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in the Attitude and Teamwork category. |
Rio Montoya - Cause for Applause |
Searching for Similar JobsDear Nicky, I'm an importer and want to share a tip that might help other importers as well. Whenever I enter a job in Marketplace, I then run a search to see if I can find similar JOBS. The reason is that I might have a great candidate who isn't a fit for *my* job, but could be perfect for another partner's job. Or, that partner might find the right person for my job. There's a fair amount of crossover with similar jobs in different locations, so my candidate in Atlanta (who doesn't want to relocate to New Jersey), could be perfect for a similar job already in Atlanta. I think most of us typically think that importers should be looking for exporters, but I've had some luck with this strategy of connecting with other importers in the same space. I hope it works for others, too. I'm looking forward to a great year! Hunting in Houghton |

Quick Tips for Candidate AlertsWe have had several recent inquiries from members who are not getting the desired results in their Candidate Alerts. Here are some tips to improve your search results:
|
Special Characters in Job TitlesPlease do not use non-numeric “special” characters in your job titles – they cause 404 Page Not Found errors on search engines as they break the URL of the job posting. If you are using the Job Board, this means your record won’t be visible on the board, Google, or any of the aggregator sites that we use. |

Salary History Becoming Off-Limits for RecruitersOur guest blogger is Anthony Carabba, Jr., who has been an employment lawyer for nearly 25 years and is the founder of Carabba Law P.C., a New York City employment law boutique. Anthony assists organizations and individuals in navigating all aspects of the complex, ever-changing employment law landscape. He may be reached at 212.430.6400 or acarabba@carabbalaw.com. In a swell of recent legislative activity with particular importance to recruiters, numerous states and cities have banned employers — as well as their agents and employment agencies — from asking job applicants about their current or prior salary history during the hiring process. New York City recently enacted such a ban, joining Massachusetts, California, Delaware, Oregon, San Francisco and Philadelphia. It’s a hot-button issue, with numerous other states and municipalities considering enacting similar bans, while many businesses remain opposed. In one noteworthy development, the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce sued the City of Philadelphia to stop the enforcement its ban. The ban is now stayed pending court determination. |

There are about 65 people currently participating in the pilot and we're ready to expand it to a larger audience. What is Clearview Social, and what is this pilot all about? |

Making Splits with Members who ResignDear Nicky I received a call from an NPAworldwide partner telling me she placed my candidate, which is great news. I then saw in the Membership Updates that her firm is resigning. I know the placement has not been entered into Marketplace yet. I called my partner to remind her, but so far the placement is still not entered. Since that firm's resignation is likely to be final before the client makes payment, am I covered by indemnification if something goes wrong? Nervous in Newaygo |
Client Wants to Limit Referral Time PeriodDear Nicky, It's finally happened. One of my clients is changing its terms for recruiters. The new policy states that after 45 days, any candidates I have submitted no longer "belong" to me and I won't be paid for any placements of said candidates. How does this impact NPAworldwide? Ownership ChangesSince each NPAworldwide member firm is a part-owner of the network, there are some pretty specific rules about the ownership of member firms: |
"Percentage of Client Fee" Field ExplainedMembers who post candidates on Marketplace are required to provide a "percentage of client fee" for the successful placement of that candidate. This refers to the fee percentage the CLIENT pays. Job recruiters are OBLIGATED to accept their partner's stated minimum fee. |
Writing Effective Job Titles and DescriptionsAs you are maybe now aware, NPA promotes all of the Jobs posted on the NPA Job Board on multiple aggregator sites. You too might be using the same sites, but since we are doing pay per click, there is a good chance the NPA submission is the one generating your results. You will know if you get an email that says the candidates is a Job Board Candidate. Here is some good insight on how to write an effective position description: |
