Update on Ft. Worth Global Conference![]() The future of face-to-face meetings around the world is unknown. We all long for the opportunity to meet with friends, family and business associates as we once did. While we are unsure of when travel will return to pre-Covid levels, we are planning for that day. Let’s hope the vaccine arrives sooner rather than later and is both safe and effective. |

In our first case, which is the correct answer? Agency A sends or discusses a job order with Agency B. B takes no action. Subsequently B discovers the job order independently through normal marketing efforts and makes a placement. A. This is NOT a split placement, as long as, B did not use any information provided by A to acquire the job order. B. This IS a split placement since A initially informed B regardless. C. Owner Responsibilities in NPAworldwide![]() It is now over 20 years since I last practised law and so I am a bit rusty. One of the concepts that I still recall from contract law is the "Indoor Management rule." An outsider dealing with a company should be able to make certain assumptions about the regularity of the internal affairs of the company. This provides certainty to people dealing with a company that they cannot just say, "Oh sorry, Donny wasn't authorised to do that." |

Are You Being a Good Exporter?![]() Dear Nicky, |
Laws for Recruiters to Know |
Be Kind to Your Future SelfHope you are safe and well. Recently I had a really interesting conversation with a psychologist friend on procrastination. We were discussing why some people (like me) too often leave tasks (eg proposals and reports) to the last minute. A fast-approaching deadline makes matters more stressful and rarely leads to better results. We discussed a strategy of doing smaller tasks regularly and then rewarding yourself when the job is done early, eg taking time off. He described this as “being kind to your future self.” This really resonated with me - not in an altruistic “do-goody“ way but a practical one where there is clear self-benefit. |

Too Many Unqualified CandidatesDear Nicky, I was on a Practice Group call the other day and mentioned a job I have that is not posted to Matchmaker. Zooming Your Browser In/OutIf you have your browser set at higher than 100% ("zooming in"), you may notice some fields or features of Matchmaker don't work correctly or aren't visible to you. For example, if you set your browser to 200% size, the Matchmaker drop-down menus for Partners, Candidates, Jobs and Splits will stop working - this is true in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Zooming "out" to something less than 200% will restore the menu functionality. |
Make Your Resume Parse-ableCustom fonts, logos, and graphic images on your resume may make you feel smart and unique. The bad news…the machines reading your resume don’t like what you have done. Special features in a resume can confuse the parsing software and do not allow the data to be properly extracted or read from your document. Avoid non-standard designs, colors, and charts on your resume. |
Developing a New NicheDear Nicky, My business has been tied closely to the oil and gas sector for a long time. As you can imagine, with oil prices so low I started to feel the hurt, then COVID-19 happened and things went from bad to worse. I hear from others that you can “re-invent” yourself with NPAworldwide; you can go after more business, new business, international business, or even work with others on their jobs. Can you tell me where to start? Branching Out in Branch County |
What About Bounty Jobs or Similar Services?Case #1 TRUE or FALSE: A direct client/agency or candidate/agency relationship is required prior to submitting job orders/assignments or candidates to a trading partner. |
Reach Out and Touch SomeoneWhat if I told you that I could get you one warm call with a potential client a week? A client that loves recruiters, a client that is happy to pay your fees; a client who will appreciate you working with them? Sounds good? Well that is one of the key benefits of our network. Everyone accepted wants to split with you. They hopefully love recruiters (given that’s what they are), they are happy to pay your fees as you are helping them make a placement that would otherwise not have happened and they appreciate you as you have either made their client / candidate happy. |

Requesting More Info About a JobMatchmaker has a feature that allows users to easily send an email to a partner requesting more information about a posted job. Too many of these "request for more information" messages are extremely generic. Many of them simply say, "I would like more information about this job" or "Please send me more info about this role" or similar. These kinds of notes are not helpful to the importer (partner with the job). |
Setting the Default Currency in MatchmakerDid you know you can set a default currency in Matchmaker? The default for all users is USD, but you can customize the salary to automatically apply a different currency standard to all of your posted candidate and job records. So Australian members who typically work with Australian candidates and Australian jobs, can set the default to Australian dollars. Those in Europe can change the default to euros. |
Getting Help with My Posted JobsDear Nicky, I have been posting my jobs in Matchmaker and not getting a lot of help. What am I doing wrong? I would think right now would be the best time to fill jobs. Need Help in Nester |

Some Ideas for Working "on" Your BusinessFirstly, hope you are all safe and well. 2020 has so far been a year of challenges across a number of fronts, not least economically. The recruitment industry is always at the pointy end of macroeconomic change and I know many of us are feeling this acutely right now. We have 10% of the number of job orders we had in February. If it is any consolation, recruiters also feel the benefits of upturns. Companies will need to re-skill and grow quickly and we are positioned to help them do that. |

Resume FormattingAs more members have recently been working with candidates, we are seeing an increase in tech support requests related to difficulty parsing resumes. In almost every instance, the resume in question is full of logos, pictures, tables, or other images. The resume parser can ONLY read text. Resumes that are filled with images will not parse correctly. |
Sharing Retainers and Engagement FeesDear Nicky, I have a retainer with my client and sometimes get engagement fees up front with other clients. I do not feel I need to share these with my NPAworldwide split partners. Is it right to do that? Stingy in Steubenville |
An Old School Connection Leads to New Split PartnersBeing a member of NPAworldwide not only improves my business bottom line, I also meet and make a lot of new friends from around the world. I have done splits with members from Africa for a client in Asia using a candidate from Europe. NPAworldwide is global and I have been a member since 2011. I have always been involved with NPAworldwide volunteer work. I was appointed Members Manager for North Asia from 2011 till 2017, a totally voluntary role serving the Asian community for a total of 6 years. I am still volunteering but in a different capacity. |
How Well Do You Know the Importer and Exporter Rules?Candidate Ownership A candidate you previously imported, but did not place, responds to one of your job postings for a subsequent opportunity. Which is true? A. You’ll still be working this candidate as a split placement; you previously have the candidate from a trading partner. B. No split
|
I love surprises, except...Well, it *was* recently my birthday, not a milestone number but given what has happened the last few months, every birthday is worth celebrating. I love surprises especially for my birthday. I equally dislike surprises at work. You know the feeling when you reach for your phone and see the name of a candidate who is due to start work tomorrow or a client calls you 20 minutes after an interview is meant to have started. These are the surprises we can all do without. |
Brokerage Percentages ReminderWe get asked on occasion what the brokerage percentages are. This is more frequently a question by newer members or those that are using a service like the Job Board for the very first time. |
Using the Modal Window for Candidate RelocationWe have recently rolled out a new modal window to make it easier to select relocation options for candidates who are open to multiple areas. When you enter a candidate, you will see an Add Details button under Will Candidate Relocate. Click the button to open the modal window. |
Glimmers of Hope in a PandemicDear Leland, Thanks for writing! I agree that the overwhelming amount of negative news isn’t helping anyone’s mental health. While it would be silly to pretend everything is fine and normal, there ARE reasons to remain hopeful and optimistic. There are certainly pockets in healthcare, warehousing, distribution, logistics and a few others where hiring activity is still solid. Many clients are continuing to press forward with interview plans, even if they are delaying onboarding. Candidates and hiring managers are more available for conversations than they have been for a long time. This means that great candidates and smart companies may have a unique opportunity to upgrade their situations right now. Most members are reporting steep declines in open jobs, but some are reporting that the smaller volume of jobs is leading to a higher fill rate. On top of that, NPAworldwide has an annual budget that is adopted by the Board of Directors. This budget includes planned income for brokerage, which is a direct reflection of split placement activity. This year’s budget is based on brokerage of just over $7,100 per week. I’m pleased to say that going back over the past 8 weeks, to the beginning of the pandemic, there has only been ONE week in which new acceptance activity was BELOW this target. That was the week ending March 27th, and the acceptance activity was 86% of goal, so lower than planned but hardly catastrophic. The week prior (ending March 20th), members reported acceptances totaling 188% of the brokerage goal. For the seven weeks since, the totals have been 106%, 100%, 116%, 113%, 103%, and 108%. A small number of reported acceptances will result in fall-offs or no-starts, but your network is well-positioned to survive … and thrive. Actual brokerage cash-in for April was about 87% of goal, with some clients paying more slowly than normal. The membership pipeline also remains strong with steady interest by prospective members. We enrolled 13 new firms in April – take some time to get to know them! Make them feel welcome and look for split placement opportunities. NPAworldwide members have always relied on each other to survive during challenging economic cycles. This time is no different. Nicky Send letters to: nanderson@npaworldwide.com |
Glimmers of Hope in a PandemicDear Nicky, I’m tired of all the doom and gloom about the pandemic and the economy. I’ve been recruiting long enough to have survived a downturn or two, so I know we’re going to get through this one, too. Is there any data that NPAworldwide can share to help bolster my confidence? What to Do When Recruiters Leave Your FirmI’m sure most of you have processes that you follow whenever you have staff departures. If updating NPAworldwide is not part of your regular departure process, please make sure that happens going forward. If you are not keeping your staff list updated in Matchmaker, you run the risk of former recruiters still having active logins. |

Check the Locations on Your Search AlertsRecently, there has been an increase in tech support requests for job alerts that appear to be delivering results for incorrect locations. In almost all instances, this has been due to location details either being incorrect, missing, or not updated from the old Matchmaker interface. If you want a search alert (candidates or jobs) to deliver records for a specific geographic location, you MUST include that information in the Location field on Matchmaker. Without it, your alert will contain records from other geographic locations. |
Connecting with Trading PartnersDear Nicky, In this turbulent time, I really want to connect with as many NPAworldwide partners as possible. I think we can work together to make it through this economic crisis. What is the best way for me to effectively make those connections? Networking in Nunica |
Always Look on the Bright Side of LifeI woke up at 5 am the other day to the sound of laughter with my 10 year-old son watching TV. Curious as to what was causing cacophony—was it his favourite Disney show? the latest sitcom? No, he was cackling at the final scene from the 1979 Monty Python classic “Life of Brian.” His laughter turned into melody as he started singing “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. |
Book For Sales: The Ability to Find Clients --in today's market!NPAworldwide is always on the lookout for new information from recruitment authorities to increase your production. Converting PDFs to WordA fairly common support request we receive at NPAworldwide is regarding PDF resumes that won't upload to Matchmaker. If your candidate has embedded images, tables, odd fonts, or other problematic data in the PDF, you'll likely encounter difficulties getting that resume/CV uploaded. You may even have trouble opening the file. As more candidates use mobile devices for their career searches, we think that PDF versions of resumes are likely to increase, since they can easily be stored and opened on a mobile device. |
Is This a Split Placement? I Already Have the Candidate in My Database. The NPAworldwide mission statement emphasizes that we value Professionalism, Honesty and Integrity, Knowledge, and Teamwork. "I already have that candidate in my database..."Dear Nicky, A member sent me a resume and I remembered the name, so I looked in my database and have that candidate. Quality MattersI wanted to talk about quality in one of my last Vignette articles. Jason Elias will be taking over authorship of the column later in March. He is smarter and funnier so you should be in good hands and entertained. I am passionate about quality! In my view, quality is the primary driver on how we differentiate ourselves. This is true as individual members and as a network. We have quality standards within our firm (WilliamCharles Search Group) and we promote those standards as part of our branding pitch. Quality standardization is challenging within our network. Why?

10 Ways to Add More ValueOur industry is more competitive than ever! This crowded recruiter marketplace is the result of two factors. First, we are 8-9 years into a reasonably good economy for recruiters. Secondarily, we continue to be in a candidate-short market causing employers to need us. It might not be this year… but when the downturn hits, it will put some recruiters out of business. |

Are Your Images Properly Licensed?I've just read an article from a meetings-related colleague who is in some hot water over using an improperly-sourced image in a blog post. In short, her business failed to follow its own policy regarding photo/image use and inadvertently posted a blog that featured an image that was downloaded from Google search results. Turns out that image was copyrighted and not available for public use. She has received a cease-and-desist letter and is likely to pay a significant fine even though she removed the image immediately upon receiving notice of the error. |

The Path to an Effective Pricing StrategyI read a good article in The Staffing Stream (from Staffing Industry Analysts) this week about how to talk about your service in terms of value instead of price, and some pricing strategies recruiters can borrow from other industries. There are some great ideas to consider for your businesses. Here's an excerpt: |
The 4 A's of Talent AcquisitionJim Lyons is this week's guest writer. On a recent project with Mike Sudermann, I got an idea for a new client development tool. I’ve developed an assessment and case studies that help hiring managers think critically about the jobs they need to fill. The 4A’s of Talent Acquisition is a simple assessment focused on the one question hiring managers must consider when bringing a job to market: How long will it likely take to fill this job? |

NPAworldwide Network Anniversaries - November 2019Congratulations to the following firms celebrating a milestone anniversary as NPAworldwide members in November 2019: |
Please Review Your Location SelectionsThe launch of the new Matchmaker UI included a change to a brand-new locations database. This change was made in direct response to feedback from members about the usability and functionality of the old locations database. Data conversion was run on more than 1 million member records to facilitate the transfer to the new logic. As is common with such a large processing task, some records were not successfully converted. Members are finding inconsistent results in location-based searches as a result of this data conversion process. |
Talking to Candidates About NPAworldwideDear Nicky, One of my candidates recently called me, upset that she'd been contacted by another NPA partner who saw her details on Matchmaker. Her job search is confidential and she was really worried that her resume was posted on some public site. I know our sharing site is private and members-only, but obviously she didn't understand that. What should I do to avoid a repeat scenario? Puzzled in Paw Paw |
Hall of Fame Highlight - Richard BryantGet to Know Hall of Fame Member Richard Bryant, Bryant Associates, Inc. (#4794), Chicago, IL, USA What was your favorite NPAworldwide meeting? It was also my most memorable one. I was previously a 20-year member of NPC, a competing network purchased by NPA in 1989. During my last 10 years with that group, I performed a routine that was a parody of Johnny Carson’s soothsayer, Carnac the Magnificent, which I dubbed Norcrap The Magnificent. |
Let's Talk Money!Laura LaBine is this week's guest writer. There are many rewarding aspects to why we work, such as the satisfaction of connecting people to their dream job or celebrating a successful placement with a partner, but at the end of the day money pays the bills. It’s always a good idea to have a conversation with your partner early and often to discuss payment terms. This doesn’t just refer to getting paid by the client, but also how we pay each other. Since some payment methods can take time to process or set up, it can be beneficial to set expectations with each other at time of placement. We owe it to each other to be super transparent and cooperative in communicating payment terms. |
Why You Should Volunteer with NPAworldwideHave you heard the phrase, “time is money” or “stay close to the money?” I would argue that time might be our most valuable commodity. This naturally begs the question why volunteer if you are not getting paid?

How to Hard Refresh or Clear the Cache on Your ComputerPeriodically, it's a good idea to manually clear the cache from your website browser. Cached pages are simply stored versions of web pages that you visit. Storing a copy helps the page load more quickly the next time you visit the page. The downside is that if the web page gets changed or updated, your browser might still be loading the old (cached) version. This can lead to a variety of errors or even a non-responsive site. |

Expand Your Business - Elevate the Status of Your FirmI’m always surprised to hear members say that they are not interested in global recruiting. In some cases, members might be in a function that is local or regional but in most cases we all can take advantage of NPAworldwide’s global capabilities. Why promote global capability? Lots of great reasons including additional revenue, differentiates you from your competition, your clients likely struggle with needs in other countries and it gives your business caché and will elevate your status with your client. |

Which Importers Should I Work With?Dear Nicky, There are a few long-time members in NPA who work a narrow niche. As an exporter I try to help them, but every time I submit a candidate they tell me, "I already know them, thanks." Then I hear later they complain they don’t get any help. They do post lots of jobs, but I'm not sure I am spending my time wisely working with them. Sourcing in Saline |
Focus = SuccessSuccess in our business right now requires laser focus on the right stuff! Flashback 25 years and our business was much simpler – let’s face it the world was much simpler -- but I’ll leave that for someone else’s blog. Recruiting 25 years ago… we used the phone book, paper job order/candidate files along with lists and directories. It was not easy but the path to success was simple and straight forward….through the phone. The only distraction was the person next to you who talked too much. Remember those times? |

Pick Up the Phone!Today's guest writer is Jim Lyons, JD, CPC As you know, the internet and social media make it fairly easy to find candidates today. It is not like years ago in recruitment when you had to call into a company and use a suitable pretext to try to find out who was doing a certain job. Yes, that type of recruitment theatre is gone. Let’s face it, today it is easy to find the right person. The problem is: it is easy for everyone to find that same right person. |

When to Share Information with ExportersDear Nicky, I’m an exporter and have noticed that importers sometimes let me know that my candidate is in play at different times during the process. Some importers tell me before a phone interview is scheduled, while others don’t tell me until after an in-person interview. Very rarely, I have found out after a placement is made. While it’s always great to hear about placement activity, I’d rather know on a more timely basis. Is there a rule or policy about sharing this information? Exporting in Ecorse |

Take a More Realistic Job Order by Asking the Right QuestionsAre your clients stuck on a list of unrealistic requirements? More times than not, organizations are fixated on lists of requirements. This might be a software, or an industry experience or other skill related to a bullet point on a job description. Of course, you can never tell or direct your clients to change their approach. This directive level of influence is usually limited to a doctor, lawyer, CPA or clergy. Recruiters or even search consultants, not so much. |
