If you are posting jobs to the job board and not responding to applicants, you are damaging the NETWORK's reputation. Candidates who apply to your jobs and don't get a response think NPAworldwide sucks. Job seekers only see the NPAworldwide company name. If you aren't going to respond, please don't use the job board because you're harming NPAworldwide.

In short, optimism is down from a year ago, but the majority of members are still expective positive results. Open roles are difficult to fill, candidates remain hard to find, and in some instances candidates' desires no longer reflect the realities of the market.

Greetings, NPAworldwide. This Chairman's Corner is my last as your Chair. At the upcoming Annual Business Meeting on 7 March, I will be turning over the Chair to my good friend Pam Robison. I will then move to the Immediate Past Chair seat until the 2025 Annual Business Meeting. 

Serving as your Chair has been an honor and privilege. I would like to thank all of my fellow board members past and present for their support and guidance. And of course a big thank you and shout to our remarkable NPAworldwide Staff.  

As we get ready to welcome our new President Kerry Crockett to NPAworldwide, I would like to take a moment to recognize our retiring President, the one and only Dave Nerz. NPAworldwide has come a long way under Dave's leadership. On behalf of the entire NPAworldwide Family—thanks Dave, job well done!!!!!!!

Lastly, I would like to thank our departing Board Members, Carola Chard, Tim Lane and Roman Duty for their service to NPAworldwide. I have asked them to share some parting thoughts below.

SpamCop Blocking Wanted Email

NPAworldwide began experiencing intermittent email delivery issues from our Outlook account about a week ago. After some investigation, we have learned that one of the Microsoft 365-owned servers that routes our email has been blacklisted by a spam filtering company called SpamCop in response to a high volume of spam coming from that particular server.

Rather than block the offending email accounts, SpamCop blocks the entire IP address, which prevents a lot of legitimate email from being delivered. This is an aggressive spam filter. If your IT provider uses SpamCop, please contact them and ask for email from @npaworldwide.com or @membernova.email to be delivered, even if it is being routed from a blacklisted server. Unfortunately, this has been an ongoing issue for the better part of a month with little response from Microsoft. Receiving Email from NPAworldwide

Periodically, it's a good idea to confirm that you are receiving email from NPAworldwide as expected. 

Here are a few tips:

  • Add @npaworldwide.com as a safe sender in your email client
  • Add @membernova.email as a safe sender in your email client
  • Check your spam/junk folders regularly
  • Use the Communication tab in your NPA Central dashboard to verify you are receiving bulk email (examples include the Vignette newsletter, sponsored content, meetings promotions and other "mass communication")

Unless there is a delivery failure that comes back to NPAworldwide (fairly rare), we have no way of knowing if our email is making it to your inbox. Email that gets delivered to your server, but not to your inbox, does not generally result in a delivery failure message. This is the vast majority of email delivery issues that we see, and the vast majority (more than 90%) are solved by adding the two safe senders as indicated above.

As we have just closed out 2023, I would like to share some thoughts/highlights of the year.

  1. Stay positive - focus on doing the right things and producing at the highest level possible. Do not be “Debbie Downer” — no one wants to work with those types.
  2. The market does change - anyone that has been in recruiting for any length of time knows the market is always changing. It is how you react to change that makes or breaks you. There is plenty of work out there for those who can handle getting out of their comfort zone.

Dear Nicky,

I recently filled a role with a candidate provided by a fellow NPA member – yay! It’s a 90-day guarantee and my partner understands that and said they will do their best to help fill the role in the case of a fall-off. The problem is my partner is saying that they will not pay me back the fee if we aren’t successful in finding a replacement. I’m hoping we don’t have a fall-off, but in case we do… aren’t they obligated to pay the fee back to me if we don’t find a replacement?

My dear friend Laura Schmieder shared this phrase with us a couple of years ago when she received the Chairman’s Award; it really hit home for me that day.

RCSA Board Appointments for NPAworldwide members

Some wonderful news from Australia/New Zealand this week.   It has just been announced that two NPAworldwide members; Catherine O’Mahony, OnQ Recruitment and Jason Elias, Elias Recruitment have been elected to sit on the RCSA Board. 
 
The RCSA (Recruitment, Consulting and Staffing Association) is the peak body for the recruitment and staffing industry in Australia and New Zealand.  RCSA drives professional practice, promotes & protects the industry.  The Board of Directors is responsible for all matters pertaining to the running of the Association, including determining policy, practices, management, and operation of RCSA .   Catherine will be the representative for NSW/ACT and Jason’s role will be to represent Accredited Professional Members.  Having NPAworldwide members on the RCSA board is a great advantage, as they bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. 
 
Many will know that Jason is a long-term member of NPAworldwide, he celebrates his 20th year in the network this month and has also been an active volunteer in NPAworldwide with a collective 10 years volunteerism, including Chairman of the Board. We recently had the opportunity to thank Jason for his efforts, with Chair-Elect Pam Robison presenting him with a plaque at our AU/NZ Conference last month. 
 
Catherine has also been a long-term, active member of NPAworldwide with OnQ Recruitment celebrating 10 years of membership this year. 
 
NPAworldwide and RCSA have strong partnership with many of our members, also members of RCSA.   RCSA has supported our AU/NZ Conferences, including their CEO Charles Cameron often presenting on the state of the industry at our events.   I am sure having Catherine and Jason represented on the board will further strengthen our partnership.

It has been quite the week. I share a lot of details about my jobs with my NPAworldwide partners so they have all the information I have. Lately I have been feeling like it is a mistake. I had one recruit from my client and another post a job that said no advertising. My trading partners need to help protect my relationship with my client. They are being sloppy and lazy with permission to advertise and not paying attention to where the candidate is currently located and where they work. Not sure what more I can do.

NPAworldwide was founded in 1956 to give independent recruiting agencies a way to compete against the recruiting franchise business model.
 
1956. On November 30, 1956, 35 agencies met and formally established the split fee network. By December, the recruiting network had 61 members operating in 25 states and the District of Columbia.
1966The NPA News was published with job orders from participating firms filling more than 50 pages per month.
1968. The first Canadian NPA members were added to the split fee recruiter network.
1971. NPA opened its Printing–Distribution Center in Pittsburgh, PA.  This operation distributed over 100,000 items per month.
1974. NPA hired its first employees and established headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
1986. Acquisition of the EMF Super Sorter allowed NPA to customize hard copy packages mailed to members based on their specialty, this took place in Grand Rapids, Michigan
1996. NPA began to expand its focus as an international recruiting organization with the addition of members outside of North America, particularly in Asia and Australia/New Zealand.
1997. The NPA candidate and job-sharing site was awarded a listing in Computerworld’s “Top 100 Most Effective Internet Applications.”
2006. NPA celebrated its first 50 years of success as a worldwide recruiting network.
2014. Acquired NBN
2016. Grew membership over 500
2019. Acquired IPA network

Dear Nicky,

I am a job recruiter, with lots of open jobs right now which is appealing to candidate recruiters. I have a few tips I would like to share with candidate recruiters so that we can be more successful working together.

  • Don’t send a candidate just because they work in my focus area; make sure you understand what it is I do and how I do it before sending candidates.
  • Don’t send a candidate that you haven’t talked to; you wouldn't do that to your client, and your NPAworldwide partners are also your clients.
  • Don’t send a candidate and call me ten minutes later to see if I received him and could I possibly place him.
  • Make sure you have “qualified” your candidate against my job order. I am not looking for speculative candidates.

I like splits and making money with my NPAworldwide partners, and I think these tips will lead to more success.

Hello to all my esteemed NPA affiliate partners. I’ve been on this journey for over 32 years, when I joined my dad’s business back in 1991. He had started the firm in 1965. I was absolutely clueless and probably looked like a deer in headlights. I remember going to my first NPA meeting in 1991. I was skeptical at first and didn’t really get what was going to unfold over the next 30+ years. Besides the compensation we get from making splits, the top beneficiary I got was lifelong friends.

Recently, 60+ members of NPAworldwide gathered for a Regional APAC meeting in KL to network, share their thought leadership, best practices, make new friends and renew old friendships. In doing so they carry on a tradition and practice at NPAworldwide that goes back almost 70 years. I would like to thank Carola Chard our Board member for APAC, Andrew Thoseby Board Member for AUS/NZ, and Kristen Davie for doing such a great job organizing this event. It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I reflect on our recent conference held in Kuala Lumpur. With over 60 members from across the APAC, Europe, and the USA, this gathering truly exemplified the remarkable power of face-to-face meetings. Have you thought about picking up the phone instead and having a conversation? Yes, I said it, a real person-to-person live talk. You can learn a lot more on a phone call about the ins and outs of the client and your partner. This is also a great way to build relationships with your NPA partners.

The common denominator of success in NPAworldwide is being proactive, not reactive. Don't sit back waiting for the phone to ring; reach out and make things happen. The essence of NPAworldwide is centered in close personal and business relationships, trust and integrity. Yes, veteran members will introduce themselves to you, but the new members must take the lead in initiating new relationships.  

In today's Vignette, I have asked two relatively new members, Adam Pantelli and Phil Hurd, to briefly share their first-year success stories. I had the pleasure to speak to both Adam and Phil recently. In discussion, it was clear to me that both wanted to make sure the membership knew who they were and what they could deliver.  It comes as no surprise the results that followed.

In my continuing mission to popularize the Essence of NPAworldwide, I was honored two weeks ago to attend a retirement lunch for Kay Durkin in Philadelphia. Kay received Honorary membership for her years of service to the network. Kay is also a past Chairman's Award winner, Board member and longtime volunteer. I would like to thank Laura Schmeider and Jeff McGraw for setting up this event. It was great to speak to Kay about her iconic NPA participation over the years.

Please help me in sending a big thank you to Wayne Daley (Launch Gig, NPA 2079) and Mike Yahkind (Technical Paradigm, NPA 4038) for their valuable volunteer efforts over the last few years. Wayne started and ran the Cybersecurity Technology Subgroup for about 6 years. Shortly after joining NPA, Mike spearheaded the Fintech Subgroup and ran it for 3 years. Both Mike and Wayne did outstanding jobs with these groups, having created engagement that resulted in placements. Their volunteer efforts are greatly appreciated! Greetings. For this Vignette issue, I have asked NPAworldwide President Dave Nerz to summarize the impact of recently-enacted legislation that is coming into effect in Ontario, CA on 1 January 2024. It is critical that all Ontario and Canadian NPAworldwide members reach out and complain to their respective legislative leaders on the anti-competitive and punitive nature of this legislation. —Jim Lyons, Chairman

New legislation was announced in July and will go into effect on January 1, 2024. It says, “Any person who, for a fee, finds, or attempts to find, employment in Ontario for prospective employees”…and “Any person who, for a fee, finds, or attempts to find, employees for prospective employers in Ontario…” is required to hold a license. The cost is $750 plus a $25,000 CND irrevocable letter of credit. This is for those residing in Ontario and those doing work with Ontario-based employers or employees. It will have an impact on NPAworldwide and members doing work in Ontario.

The Essence of NPA was alive and well in Sicily this past June 1-3. Close to 30 attendees gathered at the beautiful ocean view, RG Naxos resort. Attendees shared their best practices and thought leadership. In doing so, new friendships were made, and old friendships were renewed.

Members are reminded that the specific client fee is required on all jobs posted to either NPAmarketplace or the NPAjobboard. The fee can be listed as a percentage or a whole number in the event of a flat fee, and is entered in the Client Fee Percentage field.

A few days ago I had the pleasure to speak to a new member, an individual pretty new to the recruitment industry (kind of like Kay years ago). I was impressed with this new member's energy and excitement about joining the network. Members like this represent the future of NPAworldwide. Equally as important, we must never forget the wonderful history of this almost 70 year old recruitment network. 

Today the Chairman's Corner recognizes retiring member Kay Durkin of Phoenix Partners in greater Philadelphia. Kay's iconic journey with NPAworldwide started in 1993. I am sure all readers will take a moment to wish Kay well in the Chairman’s Corner comment section below.

I must admit I did not have a great Q1. For the first time in years, I got caught on the wrong side of M&A activity in the FinTech/Financial Product Software space. For me the new year came with the loss of three long time clients. In addition, a great new client from 2022 put everything on hold.... On the legal search side of my business, Big Law went in the direction of Big Tech and slowed down hiring. However, with NPAworldwide members and with the NPAworldwide brand behind me, all is now moving in the right direction.

It's been an honor and a joy to serve on the NPAworldwide Board of Directors for the last four years. My specific focus was leading the Practice Groups, and they have proven to be the ever-evolving heartbeat of our organization. When I joined ten years ago, the Chem Processing group was the top revenue-performing group. With shifts in the economy and market, the group withered down to a point where it was combined with the Agriculture and Food practice group. As change is a constant, it will be interesting to see where the labor market creates now specializations that would require the support of a Practice Group.

According to the latest Business Barometer Survey from NPAworldwide, the global recruitment network, demand for talent remained strong through the end of 2022. The survey, which is completed by independent recruitment firm owners around the world, found that 70% of respondents had results that were better than or the same as in the previous 18 months. His professionalism, dedication, and advocacy for all members of the network is a benchmark and a standard of service excellence.

In addition to being a loving family man and industry leader, Jason possesses a quick wit and a spontaneous sense of humor. I think Jason could have a second career as a stand-up comic! I have a big smile on my face as I think of several times in the midst of a serious discussion, he inserted some comic relief. Often, it was so fast and clever that it went right over my head…

Tired of hearing about ChatGPT? There's another AI game in town that I think is worth serious consideration. It's called Jasper and it was just named one of the Fastest-Growing Products of 2023. It's a tool I have been using weekly for the past couple of years to help shore up writing and other content-creation tasks. And it's unbelievably good, doing about 80% of the work for me. Dear Nicky,

I am fairly new to NPAworldwide and made my first placement already. Yay! I added the placement to the system and received the check in the mail 20 days later. To my dismay, I received a call from the candidate recruiter asking me when he would receive his money. I told him the guarantee period was 90 days but I did have the check from the client. He was not happy. Am I doing something wrong?

Last week the United States' Federal Trade Commission published a proposed regulation that would effectively ban all non-compete agreements. It would even require employers to formally rescind any non-compete agreements that are already in place. Industry attorney Bill Josey briefly addressed this for members last week in our monthly training webinar.

Dear Nicky,

A trading partner just asked me for help on a role that she has had for the past several months. It's hard to believe the client doesn't have other options in play at this point, possibly even some of the same candidates I would have recruited. It just doesn't seem like there is a high likelihood of success in filling the role now. Is it normal for partners to wait this long before asking for help?

As many of you know, I am the EMEA Director for NPA, a role I have held for a couple of years now, following on from being the UK & Ireland Area Leader previously. Being based in the UK as I am, the topic I wanted to cover with you all is “Internationalism”. This, according to the dictionary, means a cluster of ideas derived from the belief that international progress is possible, where progress is defined as movement toward increasing levels of harmonious cooperation between communities.

About two weeks ago, I booked two client meetings in New York City. On the way in, I had a lot of calls that needed to be done, so I decided to take an Uber. It was a big process day: interviews, logistics, offer discussions, a lot moving parts. I wanted to stay close and be available. Since I gave up my NYC drop-office a couple of years ago, my plan was to sit at a little coffee shop I often frequent, check messages, and make some calls. My client meetings were confirmed and were at the end of the day. All was going along well until…I realized a few minutes too late that I had left my mobile phone behind in the Uber!!!!!!!!! To make things worse, I had no laptop. I had made the decision before leaving home that all of the day’s activities could be handled by my mobile device. WOW, THIS WAS NOT HAPPENING TO ME! But it was!!!!!

As I debated on a topic to touch on with you all, I received a candidate via an NPA candidate partner that was qualified enough for me to call them instantly. When I reached the candidate and introduced myself, the candidate was confused. I thank the Lord for the gift of my life and I pray for those lost in New York City, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. I think of their families and hope the years have eased the pain of their loss. I think of the lingering health issues and the loss of life that still touches many survivors and first responders in NYC.

Over the years, and still today, I think about the two seemingly routine events that saved my own life: A subway delayed at 14th Street, and a request from my office to pick up doughnuts for the 10AM sales meeting. Both events resulting in me pushing the elevator button as the first plane hit WTC1. Were these delaying events part of the serendipity of life or the intercession of the Lord? I suspect I will ponder this question the rest of my life.

I want to share with you a moment that displays the spirit of NPAworldwide in action.  
 
As we are all well aware, the global pandemic kept many of us in place for nearly 2 years. In Australia, the lock downs and lack of travel were particularly difficult. For the first time in more than 2 years, NPAworldwide members gathered for a face-to-face meeting in Manly, a seaside suburb of Sydney, NSW. There were about 60 member-owners and sponsors gathered for our dinner on the first night of the conference. With inspiration from Jason Elias, our Past Chairman, a speaker offered some dedicated training time for “auction” to support Simone Allan’s cause, The Women’s Resilience Centre.

Dear Nicky,

I am usually a job-side recruiter, relying on partners to provide candidates. Recently, I had some extra time so I working on providing candidates for my NPAworldwide partners. I found that not a lot of members have what I call client control. That is not the way I like to work. Is there a good way for me to get that information upfront, without sounding bossy?

As we know, the hiring manager is likely giving the job order to everyone and anyone who wants to see it. I set expectations upfront with my client so I know I will get feedback, and I also make it clear that I need to know where they are sending the job(s).

You may have noticed a new email notification from NPAmarketplace beginning late last week related to members who have downloaded your candidate(s). This is an expanded feature that was previously deployed in Matchmaker to comply with GDPR. GDPR is a sweeping privacy regulation in the European Union that was implemented in 2018. Job seekers (and other individuals) in the EU have a legal right to know who has “control” or possession of their personal data, and to have that personal data deleted upon request. Anyone who works with a job seeker living in the EU must comply with the GDPR requirements. My sweet father-in-law has been in and out of the hospital for the last three months. I can tell you for sure that not all facilities are equal, nor are all service providers. Along the way, I've given shoutouts to some caregivers and some not-so-pleasant corrective suggestions to others. At times our family has been very frustrated and at others, we've been exceedingly pleased. Quick reminder to all owners and recruiters: about a year ago we began implementing some new security measures to reduce the number of inactive accounts on our sites, especially NPAmarketplace. If a recruiter fails to log in to NPAcentral for more than 180 days after their account was created, the account will be automatically deleted. This will also trigger deletions from NPAmarketplace. We have been handling this manually for quite a long time, but now have the ability to streamline this task.

About a month ago, I received a call from a member who has been with NPAworldwide for a couple of years and in the industry for about ten years. The member explained to me that she had two great sales roles, competitively priced, yet she was getting very little NPAworldwide candidate-side (CS) submissions. After further discussion, I learned that although this position was with a long-time client, the member had no sales placement experience. Setting the Default Currency in NPAmarketplace

Did you know you can set a default currency in NPAmarketplace? The default for all users is USD, but you can customize the salary to automatically apply a different currency standard to all of your posted candidate and job records. If you have your browser set at higher than 100% ("zooming in"), you may notice some fields or features of Marketplace don't work correctly or aren't visible to you. As more members have recently been working with candidates, we are seeing an increase in tech support requests related to difficulty parsing resumes. In almost every instance, the resume in question is full of logos, pictures, tables, or other images. The resume parser can ONLY read text. Converting PDFs to Word

A fairly common support request we receive at NPAworldwide is regarding PDF resumes that won't upload to Marketplace. If your candidate has embedded images, tables, odd fonts, or other problematic data in the PDF, you'll likely encounter difficulties getting that resume/CV uploaded. You may even have trouble opening the file. As more candidates use mobile devices for their career searches, we think that PDF versions of resumes are likely to increase, since they can easily be stored and opened on a mobile device.

Greetings. As I consider all of the great ideas that came out of 2022 NPA Global Conference last week, it would be easy to write about topics such as; operational best practices, technology and member achievement. In the alternative, I would rather discuss what I feel is the greatest value of in-person meetings: the opportunity to make new friends and to renew old friendships. I must say, I was very much moved by a phrase I heard last week – “The Essence of NPA.” I have never heard the phrase since joining NPA almost 10 years ago. New York City employers be aware: A new “NYC Salary Disclosure Law” will soon require employers to include a good faith salary range for every job, promotion, or transfer opportunity advertised.     I am a newer member, and I'm a bit confused about a couple of items. First, if I submit a candidate or a job directly to a trading partner, do I also have to post it on the system? Secondly, if I make a placement with a partner, and neither the job nor the candidate were posted on the system, is brokerage still owed?

    NPAworldwide has always been based on collaboration and volunteerism. There is no better example of this than the Community Service Award.  

    The brainchild of Chair-Elect Jim Lyons, this award is now in its third year. Previous winners include Jon Davis of Perfect Fit in Berlin, Connecticut (USA) and Simone Allan of Mondo Search in Sydney Australia. Winners receive a plaque and $1000 towards their project/ charity.

    "As a recruiter I can tell you that a resume provides valuable info, but what is most valuable is a resume with a recruiter’s judgement and notes. If you have a high-level candidate pick up the phone, call those folks and get a good sense of what they do and what they want. Make sure that is included in the notes you send your NPA Partner when you send the resume."

    Job Board Usage - Recruiter Contact Details

    The Operations Manual forbids inclusion of contact information on NPA Job Board postings. The reason is that inclusion of contact info allows candidates to circumvent the use of the Job Board. In these cases, the procuring cause, the Job Board, would not be known or recognized. Jobs that contain contact information will be removed from the Job Board and the offending member may be further restricted from use of the Job Board.

Some say thanks, some give me good feedback, others tell me to vet my candidate on the job specs and others I never hear from.     Boring jobs attract boring applicants so make sure yours stands out from the rest. Focus on the message itself and don’t cut and paste a long-drawn out description. Nothing bugs folks more than a job order that says things like; must be able to sit/ stand, use the phone, excel, etc. Save those details for later if important.

    A few weeks ago, I got an email from a recruiter that APPEARED to be in response to my posting in NPAmarketplace, however there was nothing in the email to indicate the sender was a member/recruiter in NPAworldwide nor did they reference NPA. I was just going to ignore it, but I looked in NPAmarketplace, did NOT see the company or recruiter name so was a bit flummoxed.     Dear Nicky,

    Thought I would share a pro tip I learned this week. I logged into a practice group call, not in my niche, and wow, I was impressed! My own narrow niche has been slow. I was surprised to hear from so many partners - some had jobs that were niche-focused and others had jobs from A-Z within a company. What I learned was that it's valuable to mix it up from time to time and find out what is happening in other sectors. It's easy to think that *everything* is slow when you are so focused on your own niche. Looking at a broader picture showed me there is plenty of work to be had. It was an eye-opener for me.

    The future of face-to-face meetings around the world is unknown. We all long for the opportunity to meet with friends, family and business associates as we once did. While we are unsure of when travel will return to pre-Covid levels, we are planning for that day. Certainly the discovery of an effective vaccine will allow the world some increased comfort and perhaps the ability to travel and meet again.  Let’s hope the vaccine arrives sooner rather than later and is both safe and effective.

    Today's discussion revolves around obtaining job orders and when a split is due to your partner. In our first case, which is the correct answer?

    Agency A sends or discusses a job order with Agency B. B takes no action. Subsequently B discovers the job order independently through normal marketing efforts and makes a placement.

    A. This is NOT a split placement, as long   as, B did not use any information provided by A to acquire the job order.

    B. This IS a split placement since A initially informed B regardless.

    C. Neither A or B

    It is now over 20 years since I last practised law and so I am a bit rusty. One of the concepts that I still recall from contract law is the "Indoor Management rule." An outsider dealing with a company should be able to make certain assumptions about the regularity of the internal affairs of the company. This provides certainty to people dealing with a company that they cannot just say, "Oh sorry, Donny wasn't authorised to do that."

    Hope you are safe and well. Recently I had a really interesting conversation with a psychologist friend on procrastination. We were discussing why some people (like me) too often leave tasks (eg proposals and reports) to the last minute. A fast-approaching deadline makes matters more stressful and rarely leads to better results. We discussed a strategy of doing smaller tasks regularly and then rewarding yourself when the job is done early, eg taking time off. He described this as “being kind to your future self.” This really resonated  with me - not in an altruistic “do-goody“ way but a practical one where there is clear self-benefit.

      Some Ideas for Working "on" Your Business

      Firstly, hope you are all safe and well. 2020 has so far been a year of challenges across a number of fronts, not least economically. The recruitment industry is always at the pointy end of macroeconomic change and I know many of us are feeling this acutely right now. We have 10% of the number of job orders we had in February.

      If it is any consolation, recruiters also feel the benefits of upturns. Companies will need to re-skill and grow quickly and we are positioned to help them do that.

      Being a member of NPAworldwide not only improves my business bottom line, I also meet and make a lot of new friends from around the world.

      I have done splits with members from Africa for a client in Asia using a candidate from Europe. NPAworldwide is global and I have been a member since 2011. I have always been involved with NPAworldwide volunteer work. I was appointed Members Manager for North Asia from 2011 till 2017, a totally voluntary role serving the Asian community for a total of 6 years. I am still volunteering but in a different capacity.

      Glimmers of Hope in a Pandemic

      Dear Leland,

      Thanks for writing! I agree that the overwhelming amount of negative news isn’t helping anyone’s mental health. While it would be silly to pretend everything is fine and normal, there ARE reasons to remain hopeful and optimistic. There are certainly pockets in healthcare, warehousing, distribution, logistics and a few others where hiring activity is still solid. Many clients are continuing to press forward with interview plans, even if they are delaying onboarding. Candidates and hiring managers are more available for conversations than they have been for a long time. This means that great candidates and smart companies may have a unique opportunity to upgrade their situations right now. Most members are reporting steep declines in open jobs, but some are reporting that the smaller volume of jobs is leading to a higher fill rate.

      On top of that, NPAworldwide has an annual budget that is adopted by the Board of Directors. This budget includes planned income for brokerage, which is a direct reflection of split placement activity. This year’s budget is based on brokerage of just over $7,100 per week. I’m pleased to say that going back over the past 8 weeks, to the beginning of the pandemic, there has only been ONE week in which new acceptance activity was BELOW this target. That was the week ending March 27th, and the acceptance activity was 86% of goal, so lower than planned but hardly catastrophic. The week prior (ending March 20th), members reported acceptances totaling 188% of the brokerage goal. For the seven weeks since, the totals have been 106%, 100%, 116%, 113%, 103%, and 108%. A small number of reported acceptances will result in fall-offs or no-starts, but your network is well-positioned to survive … and thrive. Actual brokerage cash-in for April was about 87% of goal, with some clients paying more slowly than normal.

      The membership pipeline also remains strong with steady interest by prospective members. We enrolled 13 new firms in April – take some time to get to know them! Make them feel welcome and look for split placement opportunities.

      NPAworldwide members have always relied on each other to survive during challenging economic cycles. This time is no different.

      I've just read an article from a meetings-related colleague who is in some hot water over using an improperly-sourced image in a blog post. In short, her business failed to follow its own policy regarding photo/image use and inadvertently posted a blog that featured an image that was downloaded from Google search results.       When to Share Information with Exporters

      Dear Nicky,

      I’m an exporter and have noticed that importers sometimes let me know that my candidate is in play at different times during the process. Some importers tell me before a phone interview is scheduled, while others don’t tell me until after an in-person interview. Very rarely, I have found out after a placement is made. While it’s always great to hear about placement activity, I’d rather know on a more timely basis. Is there a rule or policy about sharing this information?

      The road to riches is never found on the path of least resistance! I believe this is true in life but there is no profession where this concept is more important than recruiting.

      While good things can be achieved through social media and using email effectively – I see too many recruiters who use this as a path of least resistance versus picking up the phone. This was reinforced during a conversation recently with fellow member Jim Lyons. Jim is passionate about targeted recruiting – perhaps Jim is our next guest blogger on the subject! Anyway…Jim and I agree on the point that the art of picking up the phone and engaging a candidate or client seems to have faded from the forefront of recruiting for many.       Dear Nicky,

      Some exporters will call and ask for more information on my jobs. I spend some time educating them on what I am looking for, they thank me, and one of two things happens:

      1. I never hear from them again
      2. They spend a day or so, take a stab at it and then move on

      I pride myself in making sure I give good feedback to keep them interested. What am I doing wrong? What other suggestions do you have?

      Searching for Similar Jobs

      Dear Nicky,

      I'm an importer and want to share a tip that might help other importers as well. Whenever I enter a job in Marketplace, I then run a search to see if I can find similar JOBS. The reason is that I might have a great candidate who isn't a fit for *my* job, but could be perfect for another partner's job. Or, that partner might find the right person for my job. There's a fair amount of crossover with similar jobs in different locations, so my candidate in Atlanta (who doesn't want to relocate to New Jersey), could be perfect for a similar job already in Atlanta. I think most of us typically think that importers should be looking for exporters, but I've had some luck with this strategy of connecting with other importers in the same space. I hope it works for others, too. I'm looking forward to a great year!

      In a swell of recent legislative activity with particular importance to recruiters, numerous states and cities have banned employers — as well as their agents and employment agencies — from asking job applicants about their current or prior salary history during the hiring process. New York City recently enacted such a ban, joining Massachusetts, California, Delaware, Oregon, San Francisco and Philadelphia. It’s a hot-button issue, with numerous other states and municipalities considering enacting similar bans, while many businesses remain opposed. In one noteworthy development, the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce sued the City of Philadelphia to stop the enforcement its ban. The ban is now stayed pending court determination.

      Making Splits with Members who Resign

      Dear Nicky

      I received a call from an NPAworldwide partner telling me she placed my candidate, which is great news. I then saw in the Membership Updates that her firm is resigning. I know the placement has not been entered into Marketplace yet. I called my partner to remind her, but so far the placement is still not entered. Since that firm's resignation is likely to be final before the client makes payment, am I covered by indemnification if something goes wrong?

      "Percentage of Client Fee" Field Explained

      Members who post candidates on Marketplace are required to provide a "percentage of client fee" for the successful placement of that candidate. This refers to the fee percentage the CLIENT pays. Job recruiters are OBLIGATED to accept their partner's stated minimum fee.

      Writing Effective Job Titles and Descriptions

      As you are maybe now aware, NPA promotes all of the Jobs posted on the NPA Job Board on multiple aggregator sites.  You too might be using the same sites, but since we are doing pay per click, there is a good chance the NPA submission is the one generating your results.  You will know if you get an email that says the candidates is a Job Board Candidate.
