NPAworldwide will be closed on Monday, September 7th in observance of the US Labor Day holiday. Search alerts will run as scheduled; however, record counts are expected to be low due to the long holiday weekend. Normal posting activity is expected to resume beginning Tuesday, September 8th.

Have you ever considered that your name, your photo, and your professional reputation could be used to scam job seekers—all without your knowledge?

It's called catfishing and used to be confined to online romance scams. Now, though, it is spreading far and wide, hitting third-party recruiters and job seekers alike. Scammers create fake identities by stealing the information and photos of real recruiters, then use those fabricated profiles to trick candidates into handing over personal details or money.

AI tools have made these scams far more convincing. What once looked like an obvious fake now comes complete with polished messaging, realistic profiles, and cloned communication styles. This means even the most experienced recruiters and candidates can struggle to tell the difference between a genuine outreach and a fraudulent one. Today we're starting a new feature to help keep everyone "on the same page" with some of the basics and best practices surrounding NPAworldwide split placement activity. Policies change from time to time and everyone can use an occasional reminder to make sure everyone understands and follows the safeguards that members have put in place over our 70-year history.

Acceptance reports for all placement activity within NPAworldwide (direct-hire, contract, or job board) must be filed within seven (7) days of the candidate's acceptance of the offer. The job-side recruiter has the primary responsibility for this activity. HOWEVER, if by day 7 the acceptance report has not been filed, it then becomes the responsibility of the candidate-side recruiter to submit the report. Once the report is submitted, the partner firm also receives an electronic copy of the report. Please be mindful of this joint responsibility. Failure to report acceptances can result in disciplinary actions for both partners, up to and including expulsion or voiding a claim for indemnification in the event of non-payment. The 5% brokerage fee that is collected is a major source of revenue for NPAworldwide that is used to fund the network's operations, so it is imperative that everyone has good systems in place to ensure that all placements are reported, and all brokerage paid, on time.

One of the great features of the NPAconnect mobile app is the robust forums that allow members to get answers to business questions that crop up in a real-time manner. While we've had an Open Forum as part of the NPA Central website for a number of years, that forum does not have push notification functionality, which means that (a) members don't know when a new discussion gets created and (b) post authors don't know when there is a new response. On top of that, it takes too many clicks to manually look for that information - if you even remember to go do that.

Unlike many other software platforms, Zoom doesn't do a great job proactively letting users know when updates are available. If you haven't updated Zoom recently, you're probably overdue. Periodically, it's a good idea to confirm that you are receiving email from NPAworldwide as expected. 

Here are a few tips:

• Add @npaworldwide.com as a safe sender in your email client

• Check your spam/junk folders regularly
• Use the Communication tab in your NPA Central dashboard to verify you are receiving bulk email (examples include the Vignette newsletter, sponsored content, meetings promotions and other "mass communication")

Unless there is a delivery failure that comes back to NPAworldwide (fairly rare), we have no way of knowing if our email is making it to your inbox. Email that gets delivered to your server, but not to your inbox, does not generally result in a delivery failure message. This is the main source of email delivery issues that we see, and the vast majority (more than 90%) are solved by adding the two safe senders as indicated above.

A total of 114 responses were received, a response rate of 22%. More than 60% of responses came from North America; we would love to see a more balanced representation of responses globally. Of those, 65% focus on both clients and candidates; 19% just on clients and 16% just on candidates.

Our first NPAworldwide meetup in South Africa was a strong and encouraging start for the local network. The session was well attended and created a professional yet intimate environment that allowed for meaningful conversations and genuine relationship building.
 
One of the most positive aspects of the event was the presence of several non-members. This gave us an excellent opportunity to introduce them to NPAworldwide and clearly explain the value of being part of a global recruitment network. There was strong interest in how the model supports collaboration across borders, enables split placements, and helps agencies expand their reach without significantly increasing overheads.

We offer sincerest condolences to Tom Smith, Continental Consultants, on the recent passing of his son, Eric. A service for Eric will take place on Saturday, March14th. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions to the animal rescue charity of your choice. Please join us in extending sympathy and thoughts of peace and comfort to Tom, his wife, Vicki, daughter Laura, and their extended family during this time of sorrow.

As my time as Chair comes to a close, I want to share a final note with the membership and express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve. At the Annual Business Meeting on March 5, leadership will formally transition to Patti Steen as she assumes the role of Chair.

Following that meeting, I will continue to serve in the Immediate Past Chair position through the 2027 Annual Business Meeting.

The way NPAworldwide members engage with one another has changed dramatically over the past several years. Pre-COVID, engagement often revolved around a familiar rhythm: annual events, regional gatherings, and in-person relationship building that benefited from shared meals, hallway conversations, and the kind of unplanned dialogue that happens when people are in the same room. For many members, those interactions were the “glue” that strengthened trust and made split collaboration feel natural.

Today, the landscape looks different. Zoom and Microsoft Teams have become part of the day-to-day operating model for nearly every recruiting firm, and NPAworldwide is no exception. It would be easy to assume that more screens automatically equals less connection. In reality, the shift has brought a new kind of engagement—one that is more frequent, more accessible, and, in many cases, more inclusive.

A recently-identified bug in the NPA Central calendar has been fixed. The bug was causing some recurring calendar items to download at the wrong time. If you have downloaded any recurring calendar items, please delete those and re-download to ensure you have the correct time. This fix should also fix some Daylight-Saving Time inconsistencies that crop up periodically.

Single-instance calendar items were NOT impacted by this bug.

As many of you know, WhatsApp has been a handy gathering place for several regions and Practice Groups over the past few years. It gave members a fast way to connect, ask questions, and share opportunities. But it also came with a few realities we can’t ignore: limited security, no direct link to our member database, and—let’s be honest—more manual staff intervention than anyone should have to wrangle in 2025.

With the launch of NPAconnect, our new 365 mobile app, we’re finally able to give you the secure, dynamic, member-centric platform you’ve been asking for. This is connection the way it should be done—real-time updates, real-time member data, direct conference registration, built-in communities and forums, and one home for all things NPAworldwide.

So What’s Happening?

NPA will sunset the NPAworldwide WhatsApp Community by December 31, 2025.

After that date:

• WhatsApp groups may continue as member-administered spaces only.
• They may not use NPA branding (logo, name, icons, etc.) since they will no longer be sponsored or managed by NPA.
• A volunteer in each group can assume admin rights if the group wishes to continue.

This returns WhatsApp to an informal peer-to-peer tool rather than an NPA-operated communication channel.

Today is Marcia Bateman's last day with NPAworldwide, which means that some changes are coming to our existing engagement team. We want to take a moment to extend our sincere thanks to Marcia Bateman for her many years of dedicated service and leadership within NPA. In recognition of her service, the Board of Directors has named Marcia an Honorary Member of NPAworldwide, effective upon her retirement.

In the United States, Thanksgiving marks the beginning of a season centered on gratitude, reflection, and time spent with the people who mean the most to us. Families and friends gather around familiar meals and longstanding traditions, pausing for a moment to appreciate the good in their lives. A dozen members met at Fair Oaks Farms in Indiana last month for a Midwest Meet-Up. It's always great to spend time face-to-face with partners sharing business tips, best practices, and expertise ... with some fun thrown in for good measure. A few of the takeaway attendees shared:

• The AI info was helpful; it'd be great if at PowerUp Americas there was more in-depth information on how these can be deployed
• I need to be more open to making LinkedIn posts and liking and sharing others' info.
• Outsourcing. I never realized how many people utilize this.
• I've been told to "go to a meeting" and always balked and found a reason not to go. Now, I MUST find a reason to get there. Probably the best couple days I have had in a while - work wise.

I recently attended an Area MeetUp in Tampa, FL, with 24 of our NPA members, hosted by Directors Jenn Anderson and Patrick Long. As with all in-person gatherings, the room was full of energy and good intentions. Along with several long-time members, we welcomed five new members who joined in 2025, as well as several “first-timers” who had never attended an in-person event before.

I was honored to share a brief update from the Board of Directors and took the opportunity to explain, especially for our newer members, how governance functions within NPAworldwide. The Board of Directors manages the Strategic Plan—both short- and long-term—while Staff oversee the day-to-day operations that bring that plan to life.

We are *this close* to launching NPAconnect to the full membership. We have about 90 early adopters already using the app and providing valuable pre-launch feedback. We are currently waiting for some fixes to be made that are preventing our team from having full access to the app. As soon as that is ready, we'll be ready to launch this month. Early adopters have officially been invited to get a sneak preview of NPAconnect, our new mobile app. We had a successful launch of the live event module at the recent PowerUp Asia event and have also been able to fine-tune most of the known issues so that we can confidently bring a few more users into the app to play around. One of the features that we are most excited about is the real-time ability for members to utilize the Open Forum (and all of our discussion forums) for instant communication among partners. The app also features same-day updates as users are added and removed from our master database, which means no more manual work to make sure our WhatsApp groups are updated on a timely basis.

I am very excited to share the news about a Webinar coming in October that focuses on Volunteering in NPAworldwide. Volunteers are vital to the success of our Network. We rely on them to support and mentor other members, share their experience to enhance processes and programs and to provide governance and strategic planning for the future of the Network. Volunteers can make a true difference in the lives of other members!

The webinar will help potential volunteers more fully understand the volunteer positions available while making informed choices about the time commitments and fit for a position. If you are looking to dip your toe in the water but don’t have a lot of time available our “Micro Volunteer” positions could be a great option. If you are like me and want to fully engage in helping other members be successful then we have a variety of options for you as well.
 

Members often have questions about notifications from NPAmarketplace related to members who have downloaded your candidate(s). This is a feature that was deployed to comply with GDPR. GDPR is a sweeping privacy regulation in the European Union that was implemented in 2018. Job seekers (and other individuals) in the EU have a legal right to know who has “control” or possession of their personal data, and to have that personal data deleted upon request. Anyone who works with a job seeker living in the EU must comply with the GDPR requirements. NPAworldwide extends deepest condolences to Jason White, Dana White, and the entire team at DataMasters on the recent passing of the firm's founder, Paula White. Paula worked for more than 60 years in the IT contract and full-time staffing business operating a technology- focused company as a female entrepreneur and trail blazer for women in technology. She built and maintained strong relationships across the state of NC as a member of the NC Technology Association (formerly NCEITA, now NC Tech). Paula was a strong advocate of partnerships and split business and has been an owner/ partner with NPA more than 20 years.

Members often call me when they have a job in a location where we don’t have any NPAworldwide members. They assume that if there are no members in that area, there’s no support available. That’s simply not true. I regularly see placements happening in locations where we have no local members.  You never know until you try, as they say.

I live in a rural area, and I work with members all over the globe, so, know firsthand it is possible.

It was a warm afternoon in Toronto (July 24th) when 14 NPAworldwide members came together at the iconic Steam Whistle Brewery for an energizing and collaborative meetup. The setting was perfect for open conversation, where members shared ideas, exchanged market insights, and talked candidly about what’s keeping them up at night — from candidate challenges to client demands.

The informal setting encouraged thoughtful discussions around recruitment trends, tough searches, and success stories. It was a great reminder of the power of the NPA network — built on trust, support, and a shared commitment to each other’s success.

We are saddened to inform the membership that Marcus Ronaldi of Marcus Ronaldi Recruiting in greater San Francisco (USA) passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 8th. Marcus was a longtime member who had reached the Platinum level of our Recruiter Achievement Status program. He was the consummate volunteer, serving in multiple capacities as area leader and most recently as the leader of the Engineering / Operations / Manufacturing Practice Group. Marcus was welcoming to new members and always willing to share his knowledge, love of dogs, travel, and street food, hatred of pineapple on pizza, and more, with his many NPAworldwide friends around the world. He will be missed dearly.

Memorial arrangements are not known at this time. For those who wish to share a story or favorite memory, please do so here; we will share these with Marcus' family at an appropriate time.

It’s the summer season for a lot of members, and I’ve talked to a few lately who say it feels like things have slowed down so much that they might as well vacation until 2026.

This reminds me of something a member said years ago during a similar slowdown, he mentioned that some of his best placements happened when others were pulling back. Why? Because he stayed positive and proactive. While others waited, he kept reaching out, staying visible, and building relationships with members, potential clients, and candidates.

Whenever I am working or considering the possibility of working an affiliate’s open job, I post those jobs on my networks and advertising channels. Is that a good practice?

Acceptance reports must be filed within seven (7) days of a candidate's acceptance of an offer. This is primarily the responsibility of the job-side recruiter, but if no acceptance report has been filed at the 7-day mark, the candidate-side recruiter must do so. It is not appropriate to wait until the invoice date, candidate's start date, payment date, or any other date to file the acceptance report. Please contact Kelsea Dodd if you need assistance.

For this week’s Vignette, I had initially planned to write about global market conditions and their growing impact on our industry. Coincidentally, Marcia Bateman was preparing a similar piece for her “Musings” column. Rather than offering two separate perspectives on the same topic, we’ve combined our thoughts into this joint message.
