We often hear members tell us about deals that happen while they're at the Global Conference, and that's always exciting. This year, though, Daphne Lee from Tier1 Consulting did more than that!

A few days ago I had the pleasure to speak to a new member, an individual pretty new to the recruitment industry (kind of like Kay years ago). I was impressed with this new member's energy and excitement about joining the network. Members like this represent the future of NPAworldwide. Equally as important, we must never forget the wonderful history of this almost 70 year old recruitment network. 

Today the Chairman's Corner recognizes retiring member Kay Durkin of Phoenix Partners in greater Philadelphia. Kay's iconic journey with NPAworldwide started in 1993. I am sure all readers will take a moment to wish Kay well in the Chairman’s Corner comment section below.

Thank you to everyone who participated in last week's Global Conference in Atlanta, Georgia! It is wonderful to be back to pre-Covid attendance numbers. Not only was the overall attendance great, individual sessions were also extremely well-attended throughout the entire weekend. 

The essence of NPAworldwide was in full bloom at  our Global Conference last week in Atlanta, Georgia. Close to 150 individuals attended and celebrated the achievements of 2022, along with the promise for the future. In doing so, new friendships were made and old friendships were renewed. It was great to see close to 45 first time attendees.

Recently there has been an uptick in the number of members who have been confused about what appear to be old, outdated jobs still visible on NPAmarketplace. These are jobs that have been updated and have a current modification date.

We are so saddened to inform the membership that longtime member Meri Laird Jones passed away unexpectedly at home on May 3, 2023. Meri and her sister-in-law, Lori Laird (and previously her mother, Bonnie Davidson) own Davidson Laird.

I am honored and excited to share the news of my recent election to the NPAworldwide Board of Directors. As I embark on this new responsibility, I am eager to contribute to the continued growth and success of our collaborative community while reflecting on the journey that led me here and the invaluable resources NPAworldwide has to offer.

Shortly after starting Provision People, I recognized the immense value in collaborating with a global network of other recruiters. I must admit I did not have a great Q1. For the first time in years, I got caught on the wrong side of M&A activity in the FinTech/Financial Product Software space. For me the new year came with the loss of three long time clients. In addition, a great new client from 2022 put everything on hold.... On the legal search side of my business, Big Law went in the direction of Big Tech and slowed down hiring. However, with NPAworldwide members and with the NPAworldwide brand behind me, all is now moving in the right direction. 

I was reading an article titled The Principles of Membership.. I was wondering if I knew the principles of NPA membership so here is my attempt at it.

Members need to have a connection with NPAworlwide, and recognize the differences between your partners and how they are all independent businesses working together with one goal in mind: split placements.

According to the latest Business Barometer Survey from NPAworldwide, the global recruitment network, demand for talent remained strong through the end of 2022. The survey, which is completed by independent recruitment firm owners around the world, found that 70% of respondents had results that were better than or the same as in the previous 18 months. This indicates that businesses are still seeing positive growth even amidst global political and economic uncertainty. Dave Nerz, president of NPAworldwide, commented on the findings, saying “the data reflects a market where businesses are still willing to invest in their human capital.”

It seems that artificial intelligence (AI) has captured the industry’s attention. Maybe more than just the industry, the world seems enamored with AI. What is amazing to me is that it was not until Microsoft and Google started their PR machines that everyone started paying attention. Now I get asked if NPA will integrate AI into the network a few times a month now.  Well good news, we have had our eye on AI for much longer than it has been an industry topic and the hype machines have been pouring out stories.

Making split placements resulting in more revenue is one of the biggest reasons to be an NPAworldwide member. As we know, engagement with partners is key to success. There are many ways to interact with partners including posting jobs and/or candidates on NPAmarketplace or calling them directly.

The saying goes “make hay while the sun shines” and I hope you are all doing that now. We know that good times do not last forever, so get done what you can.

Tired of hearing about ChatGPT? There's another AI game in town that I think is worth serious consideration. It's called Jasper and it was just named one of the Fastest-Growing Products of 2023. It's a tool I have been using weekly for the past couple of years to help shore up writing and other content-creation tasks. And it's unbelievably good, doing about 80% of the work for me. I use it for email subject lines, press releases, marketing emails, rewriting content from other sources that needs more "oomph" and more.

On January 1, 2023, California and Washington State joined Colorado in requiring salary ranges to be included in job posts. Employers with no offices or employees in these states might think they are off the hook from complying, but that would be at odds with the views of the regulators.

I am fairly new to NPAworldwide and made my first placement already. Yay! I added the placement to the system and received the check in the mail 20 days later. To my dismay, I received a call from the candidate recruiter asking me when he would receive his money. I told him the guarantee period was 90 days but I did have the check from the client. He was not happy. Am I doing something wrong?

Last week the United States' Federal Trade Commission published a proposed regulation that would effectively ban all non-compete agreements. It would even require employers to formally rescind any non-compete agreements that are already in place. Industry attorney Bill Josey briefly addressed this for members last week in our monthly training webinar.

A trading partner just asked me for help on a role that she has had for the past several months. It's hard to believe the client doesn't have other options in play at this point, possibly even some of the same candidates I would have recruited. It just doesn't seem like there is a high likelihood of success in filling the role now. Is it normal for partners to wait this long before asking for help?

Welcome all NPA Members! I am pleased to have been asked to write this Chairman’s Corner for this week’s Vignette. As many of you know, I am the EMEA Director for NPA, a role I have held for a couple of years now, following on from being the UK & Ireland Area Leader previously. Being based in the UK as I am, the topic I wanted to cover with you all is “Internationalism”. This, according to the dictionary, means a cluster of ideas derived from the belief that international progress is possible, where progress is defined as movement toward increasing levels of harmonious cooperation between communities.

We are busy making plans for our annual Holiday Networking event in New York City! This year's event will be on Thursday, December 8th, starting with a catered lunch and an afternoon program.

NPAworldwide is saddened to inform the membership that longtime former member Bill O'Connell of SEEC, Inc. in greater Boston passed away on October 18th. He was 92.

About two weeks ago, I booked two client meetings in New York City. On the way in, I had a lot of calls that needed to be done, so I decided to take an Uber. It was a big process day: interviews, logistics, offer discussions, a lot moving parts. I wanted to stay close and be available. Since I gave up my NYC drop-office a couple of years ago, my plan was to sit at a little coffee shop I often frequent, check messages, and make some calls. My client meetings were confirmed and were at the end of the day. All was going along well until…I realized a few minutes too late that I had left my mobile phone behind in the Uber!!!!!!!!! To make things worse, I had no laptop. I had made the decision before leaving home that all of the day’s activities could be handled by my mobile device. WOW, THIS WAS NOT HAPPENING TO ME! But it was!!!!!

As I debated on a topic to touch on with you all, I received a candidate via an NPA candidate partner that was qualified enough for me to call them instantly. When I reached the candidate and introduced myself, the candidate was confused. This person had not heard my name, vaguely remembered responding to an email from the other recruiter, couldn’t recall the job, and I spent time overcoming this candidate’s skepticism.

I thank the Lord for the gift of my life and I pray for those lost in New York City, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. I think of their families and hope the years have eased the pain of their loss. I think of the lingering health issues and the loss of life that still touches many survivors and first responders in NYC.

Over the years, and still today, I think about the two seemingly routine events that saved my own life: A subway delayed at 14th Street, and a request from my office to pick up doughnuts for the 10AM sales meeting. Both events resulting in me pushing the elevator button as the first plane hit WTC1. Were these delaying events part of the serendipity of life or the intercession of the Lord? I suspect I will ponder this question the rest of my life.

The Essence of NPA—A term I plan to popularize during my tenure as your Chair is simply, the personal and endearing relationships between NPA members that come by and are renewed by in person meetings. Well, the Essence of NPA was alive and well at our meeting in Manly, Australia.

I want to share with you a moment that displays the spirit of NPAworldwide in action.  
 
As we are all well aware, the global pandemic kept many of us in place for nearly 2 years. In Australia, the lock downs and lack of travel were particularly difficult. For the first time in more than 2 years, NPAworldwide members gathered for a face-to-face meeting in Manly, a seaside suburb of Sydney, NSW. There were about 60 member-owners and sponsors gathered for our dinner on the first night of the conference. With inspiration from Jason Elias, our Past Chairman, a speaker offered some dedicated training time for “auction” to support Simone Allan’s cause, The Women’s Resilience Centre.

Greetings! I hope this finds you well, prosperous in business but also  making time to smell the roses and enjoy family and friends.

As your Chair I have the pleasure of interacting with members and staff, around what is working well at NPA and the points of challenge. Over the years, I have said that the common denominator of success at NPA is being proactive. It is indeed the Essence of NPA members in communication, splitting deals and sharing their thought leadership and subject matter expertise.

Beginning in November 2022, Zoom will be moving to a new quarterly minimum update schedule. This will help ensure all Zoom customers receive the latest security and privacy enhancements, in line with industry best practices.

As previously addressed, NPAworldwide has done some basic research and now we are asking members to refer great providers to their fellow members. 

It should be noted that some geographies are more difficult to solve for than others. Europe, Asia and Latin America are not as member-rich and there are many counties with different rules, laws, and languages. We will depend upon members to make recommendations in these spots.

I am usually a job-side recruiter, relying on partners to provide candidates. Recently, I had some extra time so I working on providing candidates for my NPAworldwide partners. I found that not a lot of members have what I call client control. That is not the way I like to work. Is there a good way for me to get that information upfront, without sounding bossy?

As we know, the hiring manager is likely giving the job order to everyone and anyone who wants to see it. I set expectations upfront with my client so I know I will get feedback, and I also make it clear that I need to know where they are sending the job(s).

If a partner sends you JUST the ID number for one of their jobs on NPAmarketplace, there is an easy way to find it.

The Board of Directors voted to amend the Operations Manual, Section A. Policies at its recent meeting to clarify language regarding job board usage.

You may have noticed a new email notification from NPAmarketplace beginning late last week related to members who have downloaded your candidate(s). This is an expanded feature that was previously deployed in Matchmaker to comply with GDPR. GDPR is a sweeping privacy regulation in the European Union that was implemented in 2018. Job seekers (and other individuals) in the EU have a legal right to know who has “control” or possession of their personal data, and to have that personal data deleted upon request. Anyone who works with a job seeker living in the EU must comply with the GDPR requirements. I have started getting some emails from NPA and I'm not sure why. They are reminders that I need to log in to NPA Central or my access will be deleted. Is this new? Do I really need to do something?

The Essence of NPA, a phrase I plan to popularize this year, runs straight and true in Europe. Earlier this month, members from NPA in Europe, the US and LATAM got together in Barcelona, Spain in person
for the first time in over two years. Connection Barcelona was a big success! Best practices and thought leadership were shared amongst the attendees and great speakers. More importantly, old friendships were renewed and new friendships were made.

Do you have a secure website? If it starts with HTTP ... it is NOT secure and that is definitely a big no-no, even if you don't offer e-commerce.

NPAworldwide is saddened to inform that membership that Gene Taylor, former president of the NPAworldwide Board of Directors, passed away in hospice care on June 3, 2022.

My sweet father-in-law has been in and out of the hospital for the last three months. I can tell you for sure that not all facilities are equal, nor are all service providers. Along the way, I've given shoutouts to some caregivers and some not-so-pleasant corrective suggestions to others. At times our family has been very frustrated and at others, we've been exceedingly pleased. Being fully engaged with his service providers has proved invaluable to his quality of care and overall satisfaction.

Quick reminder to all owners and recruiters: about a year ago we began implementing some new security measures to reduce the number of inactive accounts on our sites, especially NPAmarketplace. If a recruiter fails to log in to NPAcentral for more than 180 days after their account was created, the account will be automatically deleted. This will also trigger deletions from NPAmarketplace. We have been handling this manually for quite a long time, but now have the ability to streamline this task.

Finding talent is difficult. Speed to close on open positions is becoming extended. Some jobs are just not built to split…low fees, too many competitors, or strange one-off situations make it difficult to get support from your NPAworldwide partners. The NPA Job Board is a great option for these situations. We discourage the use of the NPA Job Board where you have partners investing time to source candidates. Please don’t waste your NPA partners' time. 

The Essence of NPA—I hope to popularize the phrase over the next few months. This endearing phrase came out of our recent Global Conference in Texas by way of my dear friend and  Chairman’s Award Recipient, Laura Schmieder. As I mentioned in a recent Chairman’s Corner, the Essence of NPA is the people. And one of the most efficient ways to get to know your fellow members are at small informal get-togethers. A lot can be discussed over a cup of coffee, lunch, drink after work or even stopping by a member’s office.

NPAworldwide Headquarters will be closed on Friday, May 27th and Monday, May 30th in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

Their database currently contains verified profiles for more than 400 million US and Canadian candidates. Later this summer, they are adding on a candidate engagement feature. If you've listened to Batman either in Fort Worth or on our recent webinar, you'll know this is a platform that he uses and recommends as well.
